Campbell, draft make OAK a surprise contender

Posted on: April 24, 2010 1:37 pm
I noted in an earlier blog posting that the Oakland Raiders were quietly enjoying a very solid draft. Any Al Davis team is certain to have explosive playmakers and the Raiders certainly have that. They've made moves to improve a woeful run defense with their first two picks of inside linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive tackle Lamarr Houston.

The Raiders also addressed their need for an offensive tackle with two extremely talented middle round prospects in Jared Veldheer and Bruce Campbell. While neither may be able to contribute as a starter immediately, both could ultimately develop into quality starters.

The biggest move, of course, was the addition of quarterback Jason Campbell.

Campbell has the big arm necessary to take advantage of Darrius Heyward-Bey's big play ability. He's used to attacking defenses down the seam through the tight end with Chris Cooley and inherits a young tight end in Zach Miller, who has quietly become of the AFC's best at the position.

Considering the that the Broncos are unlikely to get immediate help from their top draft picks, Demaryius Thomas and Tim Tebow and the Kansas City Chiefs are still a year or more away from truly competing, Oakland could emerging as San Diego's primary competition in the AFC West.

I absolutely love how the press figures out some way to have Oakland "contending" every year.

Campbell, draft make OAK a surprise contender

By Raiders standards this was the best draft any the history of the NFL, but Campbell will make Oakland contenders in the AFC west about as good as he made the NFC east.  Unless Heyward-Bey is better then Santana Moss, lmao, i don't see this helping all that much.

Campbell, draft make OAK a surprise contender

As a fan since the Frank Youell field days(1960) and suffering through the last 20 years (except 2002) I an honestly say this is one of the best drafts in quite some time. There has got to be a "new" feeling of optimism in the locker room. We were competitive last yr , beat some good teams and came close a few other times. 2010 is a total upgrade and can expect more W's .Campbell will help as long as he gets some blocking .Heward-Bey should shine with Louis and Chad, who you gonna cover.Running backs get more yardage with the passing game working and the defense on the sideline .JR mistakes have kept the D on the field way too much.No defense can look good on the field 75% of the time.Guarantee we get more than 12 pts a game.

Lame comment. Especially from somebody that openly advertises themselves as a "Yankz" fan. Let me guess, you live somewhere far away from New York, love the Yanks, Saints and Lakers. Idiot

For starters, Campbell is going from a very difficult NFC East to a sub-par AFC West. Getting to play KC twice as well as the denver donkeys twice should help his confidence greatly. That right there should get him more wins than in Washington.

Valdheer will be the starting left tackle right away.  He is a stud who has the footwork and strength to dominate.
Campbell OT will take time to develop.  The running game should be great and the defense with a new MLB and DT will
be better

Honestly what do you think Clark, Gates, or Daniels would do if it was JeMarcus Russell throwing the ball to them instead of their QBs. Hard to make that argument. Plus he said he was at the top, not the very top TE.

Someone else must be calling the shots for the Raiders this draft because there wasn't even one head scratcher pick the whole way. Maybe big Al has finally figured out that you pay those 6 figure salaries to the admin people in the organization for a reason, and let them call the shots once in a while. Not sold on Campbell really being the answer, but he certainly can't play any worse than J Russell. Still got the Cable man going for them, that in itself is probably an insurmountable obstacle. Kirk Morrison brought a lot of leadership to that team, that's gonna be hard to replace.
