Campbell, draft make OAK a surprise contender

Posted on: April 24, 2010 1:37 pm

I noted in an earlier blog posting that the Oakland Raiders were quietly enjoying a very solid draft. Any Al Davis team is certain to have explosive playmakers and the Raiders certainly have that. They've made moves to improve a woeful run defense with their first two picks of inside linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive tackle Lamarr Houston.

The Raiders also addressed their need for an offensive tackle with two extremely talented middle round prospects in Jared Veldheer and Bruce Campbell. While neither may be able to contribute as a starter immediately, both could ultimately develop into quality starters.

The biggest move, of course, was the addition of quarterback Jason Campbell.

Campbell has the big arm necessary to take advantage of Darrius Heyward-Bey's big play ability. He's used to attacking defenses down the seam through the tight end with Chris Cooley and inherits a young tight end in Zach Miller, who has quietly become of the AFC's best at the position.

Considering the that the Broncos are unlikely to get immediate help from their top draft picks, Demaryius Thomas and Tim Tebow and the Kansas City Chiefs are still a year or more away from truly competing, Oakland could emerging as San Diego's primary competition in the AFC West.

possibly. the chargers are still the best team in the division, but oaky got much better today. justsuk is a terrible qb - much worse than campbell. campbell is not special. but is a definite upgrade. The Raiders went from getting complete disaster on every snap to a serviceable qb. The defense will be better after the first 2 picks. JR is a cancer. he is awful at best and hopefully will be gone after this year.

"Raiders" and "contenders".. 2 words that don't really go together.  Although in the AFC west, anything can happen.  The Raiders' fan base deserves more than their ownership gives them.

Yeah, you're right.  There has never in the history of the NFL been a quarterback who average at best, then went to a different team and excelled.  Wait, there's dozens of them!  2 of those took Raiders teams to Super Bowls (Plunkett and Gannon).

I suppose it's easy to understand your "Reputation: 0" on your profile.  When you have absolutely nothing worth saying, why don't you just save your time (and everyone else's) by sitting very still and hoping the tiny liquid-filled nubbin at the top of your brain stem will grow into a more mammalian-order organ.

They are drastically improved and WILL be contenders! Yes the RAIDERS will contend this year, make no mistake about it. Campbell is in perfect position to have a BIG season, and with Wash. behind him, so is the pressure. The Raiders have shocked us all this offseason. A+ for the Seahawks and Raiders.

How is Zach Miller better than Dallas Clark, Antonio Gates, or Owen Daniels?

Ok, saying they're a contender may be a stretch, but I have to say I like most of the picks and trades the Raiders have made.  Did someone tell Al Davis the draft was next week or something?  Or lock him in a closet for a couple of days.  It seems someone else is making decisions, especially on the Campbell trade.  Davis didnt want to give up on Russell, but if its an open competition i have no doubt Campbell will be starting.  It would be nice to see too if McFadden can take a step forward and if Heyward-Bey can live up to first round potential too, they could be a good team.  Not a contender, but a good team.

You must be a donk fan who is still sour about that coach of yours who likes to trade away your best players only to replace them with guys like teblow and awide reciever who played in a tripple option where all he did was run streaks. All tebows bible thumping isn't gonna do him any good when we plant him into the dirt. Thats if he actually makes it onto the field. Good luck with that, I would rather beat a good denver team not a joke of one.
