Irsay denies Colts have decided on Luck

Colts owner Jim Irsay denied a report that the team has discussed moving a $28 million option bonus owed quarterback Peyton Manning on March 8. The bonus would trigger the final four years of Manning's contract and prevent him from becoming a free agent.

Irsay also denied an ESPN report that the Colts have definitively decided to select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick in April. Other potential top prospects include Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III.

"There has been no discussion of a deadline push,n just like '98 with Manning/Leaf..u have 2 go thru a long, disciplined process of evaluation," Irsay tweeted Sunday, referring to the 1998 draft in which the Colts selected Manning over Ryan Leaf.

With the health of Manning in question after he missed the season recovering from neck surgery, the Colts are prepared to secure a franchise quarterback who will eventually take the baton from Manning.

Irsay is focused on hiring a new general manager after firing Bill Polian last week. Irsay tweeted Saturday that the Colts are interviewing seven candidates.

If they take Luck, the Colts will do so nearly 20 years since Irsay's father, Bob, selected another Stanford quarterback, John Elway, with the No. 1 pick in 1983, but ultimately traded the future Hall of Famer.

The sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen the younger Irsay welcomes the opportunity to complete the circle.

Of course, the Colts already rectified the missed opportunity with Elway by taking Manning as the top pick in 1998 and watching him develop into a future Hall of Famer, who led them to two Super Bowls, including a Super Bowl XLI win over the Chicago Bears.

Irsay said last week that he has no idea if Manning will play football again.

Manning has had three surgeries on his neck, including spinal fusion, and didn't practice or participate in team on-field activities in 2011. He will continue rehabbing at the team facility, a luxury he didn't have during the four-month lockout last year, and is hopeful of resuming his career in 2012.

But Manning will be 36 in March and his continued health isn't certain given the nature of the surgery and the physical demands of the NFL. If Manning is healthy, Irsay had vowed he will return.

You suggest that you have a functioning cerebellum, but your comments suggest otherwise. There are no secrets here. There is no sleight of hand. There is not a single GM in the NFL that doesn't think the Colts are taking Luck. It's a no brainer. Who are the Colts going to take instead? Griffin. Puhleeze. Wilson? Put down the crack pipe. Justin Blackmon would be the only other choice that would make any sense, if the Colts were sure Manning could play. However, taking anybody other than Luck doesn't make sense. It isn't happening. Luck is a once in a generation player. You take him and don't look back. Blackmon will be the second player taken.

Thats why Polion is gone.he was gonna trade the pick. They are Mannings bitches.  He gave him all that $$$ when he was hurt and was gonna blow this because Manning is a selfish prick.

Those stories stating that Colts had decided to draft Luck never cut any ice with me. Why would they tip their hand that way and who would really believe them when they made that statement? There's no advantage in this for them and no-one with a functioning cerebellum would buy the line anyway.

The Colts did not have a missed oppurtunity with Elway. Elway flat out stated he would NOT play for the Colts if they drafted him with their pick in that draft. Kudos to everyone on here who noticed the 1983 draft was just shy of 30 years ago. Does this guy type in the dark while watching Happy Days reruns? He's a joke. Go Colts!

Wow, 35 and he hasn't taken a snap all year!  I don't see Manning coming back, especially because of the Polian firing.  Look, this is a transitional phase.  The team will probably rebuild, and the dynamic will change a bit.  Caldwell's system may be sound, and it's not his fault that Manning got hurt.  However, this is Dungy and Polian's team.  It looks bad for them when your star player goes down and suddenly there's no point in even taking the field!  No depth at QB, RB, LB, & DB...how is that Caldwell's fault??? Imagine you're him, trying to put together the depth chart at the beginning of the year, and I'll tell you what I'd say looking at the final draft:  "Man, this team sucks!"  All the losers at cornerback, all those no-name linebackers-because they never make a play, so you never hear about 'em, and Manning's backups were all drafted or signed by Polian.  So the owner rides number 18 as long as he can, but now some new GM is gonna have to build a better team than Polian did.  Good luck, sir.  Go Colts!
