Aggie's Mock Draft

Posted on: April 7, 2009 4:59 pm

This is a mock draft on whom I think each team SHOULD take in the NFL Draft, not who they will take. Sadly I believe the Lions will really take Stafford #1, but I disagree with that move. I think they should build up the O-Line first, but alas here we go . .

1) Detroit - T Jason Smith, Baylor

2) St. Louis - T Eugene Monroe, Virginia

3) Kansas City - OLB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest

4) Seattle - QB Matt Stafford, Georgia

5) Cleveland - DE/OLB Brian Orakpo, Texas

6) Cincinnati - WR Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech

7) Oakland - DT B.J. Raji, Boston College

8) Jacksonville - WR Jeremy Maclin, Missouri

9) Green Bay - OLB Aaron Maybin, Penn State

10) San Francisco - DE/OLB Everette Brown, Florida State

11) Buffalo - OLB Brian Cushing, USC

12) Denver -DE Tyson Jackson, LSU

13) Washington - T Michael Oher, Ole Miss

14) New Orleans - CB Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio State

15) Houston - OLB Clay Matthews, USC

16) San Diego - MLB Rey Maualuga, USC

17) NY Jets - RB Chris Wells, Ohio State

18) Denver - CB Vontae Davis, Illinois

19) Tampa Bay - QB Mark Sanchez, USC

20) Detroit - T Andre Smith, Alabama

21) Philadelphia - TE Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State

22) Minnesota - WR Kenny Britt, Rutgers

23) New England - MLB James Laurinaitis, Ohio State

24) Atlanta - DT Peria Jerry, Ole Miss

25) Miami - CB Darius Butler, UConn

26) Baltimore - WR Percy Harvin, Florida

27) Indianapolis - WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland

28) Philadelphia - RB Knowshon Moreno, Georgia

29) NY Giants - DE Michael Johnson, Georgia Tech

30) Tennessee - C Alex Mack, California

31) Arizona - RB Donald Brown, UConn

32) Pittsburgh - CB/FS Sean Smith, Utah

Aggie's Mock Draft

I can't really make any negative comments here.  There aren't any real obvious reaches and every pick fills a need to some extent for each team.  I agree though that Stafford will likely be the #1 pick, but unlike you I think it will be the right pick.  They have to draft a franchise QB in this draft and Sanchez won't last until #20.  After those 2 I don't really see a franchise QB in this draft.  Some team will reach for Josh Freeman because he has the physical qualities teams look for, but he is a project at best.

Aggie's Mock Draft

LOL..One of those great debates for those great minds...Leaves me out.

Listen I won't bug you any more, You obviously put a ton of thought into your draft, unlike some I've seen. I think we should just agree to disagree and leave it to the guys that get paid the big bucks to make these decissions. I would like to add you to my favorite list if you don't mind, perhaps we can point a finger at each other after the draft and say "Told you so."

Thanks for the time and effort. Good Job!

Lol hey I have no problem with criticism and/or advice. I actually welcome the discussion because it opens up new trains of thought. I actually hadn't thought of Ayers to Buffalo before, but now that you have put it out there it will be in the back of my mind.

Aggie's Mock Draft

Bills run a 4-3 defense so he would be drafted as a 4-3 DE here. I personally don't see him going as high as #11, but he is a really good player.

Aggie's Mock Draft

I would think Robert Ayers DE from Tennessee would make a great 3-4 linemen and I believe he was available at #17, he projects as a top 20, in some Mocks I've seen.  In fact here is what Rivals.com says:

Ayers does project as a 1st round pick, but as a 4-3 DE. He is not one of those "tweener" guys that gets moved outside to a 3-4 rush LB position.

I believe "The National Football Post" have him going #11 to the Bills.

I am most likely missing something though, as I said I am no expert in prognostication. Good job with your Mock Draft.

Aggie's Mock Draft

Out of the players left on the board at that time there is nobody that projects anywhere near the #17 pick that is a 3-4 DE/DT. The only guy I can think of would be Peria Jerry who is a 4-3 DT and maybe a 3-4 DE, but doubtful. If Maybin, Brown, Jackson, etc. had been on the board that's who the pick would have been, but they were all gone and Beanie was the BPA

A powerful lineman on the outside with a natural burst and very impressive pop on contact. Does a great job changing his pass rush between speed and power and uses his length and suddenness well to disengage from blocks. Has great closing speed on the outside and dips well to gain leverage off the edge. Plays strong at the point of attack vs. the run.  I believe "The National Football Post" have him going #11 to the Bills.

Aggie's Mock Draft

I like your picks, especially for the Lions. I am not a fan of the Lions but with your Mock Draft you have the suring up that O-line for years to come. Also, I do not see Brown as a first rounder, maybe mid to late second rounder.

Aggie's Mock Draft

5) Cleveland - DE/OLB Brian Orakpo, Texas

Hey Aggie,

This is the closest thing to a unanimous pick among ALL draft prognosticators, which probably means it's not going to happen. I've told countless people this and I still believe the Browns do not need to select a pass rusher this early in the draft. With 2 second round selections, the Browns will be able to find a quality player at a significantly reduced cost.

People want to point to last year's sack totals as a reason our pash rush suffered, but that simply isn't the case. Our secondary forced former defensive coordinator Mel Tucker to drop 8 guys into coverage to protect our weak corners. With strong corners, we'd be able to play man on man coverage without fear of getting burnt, and send additional guys to the passer.

In addition, the Browns have several young players at linebacker to work with already. We have a good veteran mix in addition, so pash rusher is NOT the top concern in Cleveland.

Aggie's Mock Draft

Aggie. As you know I'm a huge Packer fan. I LOVE the pick of Maybin. I already made a home-made t-shirt with the left side being a 5 in Penn St. Colors and on the right side a 9 with Packer Colors. I really hope that the Packers take maybin even if Brown is avail.

Aggie's Mock Draft

I am far from an expert prognosticator but one would think the Jets would go after a DE/DT for what is sure to be an increase in 3-4 defensive sets. I am not questioning your choice here just curious, would someone like to try and explain this pick to me?
