Guru's of what???

Anyone see that farce of a fantasy special on MLB network?  What I thought might be information TV turned out to be a comedy special.  Some (a small amount overall) of the info was correct and useful but the rest had me salivating at the idea of doing a league with those guys and running from wire to wire on their "fantasy expertise".  Please MLB you can get better "guru's" on than those guys.  I may be remembering incorrectly but I believe they were from Fantasy 411.

I practically choked when the guy advised taking Chris Davis in the 4th round.  Seriously man... I really like the kid too but in the 4th round you have got to be joking.  He should go at least 3 rounds later if not more.  Then there was the advice to go closers early.  I hope all my competition listens to them so I can run away with every league I do.

Guru's of what???

I see your point and understand where your coming from.  Again, I am in a keeper league so 'keeping' him with his future in mind was the reason why I choose him over others.  However and like you also stated, everyrone knew at some point he was going to struggle.  It's easy to jump on him now while he's probably the lowest he'll be (hopefully) this year...but the moment he starts to pick it up, all attitudes will change.  Maybe MLB was calling him to early in non-keeper leagues, but if they are paid to add a reach into thier comments, then Davis would be my choice as well.

Good Luck.

Guru's of what???

Hey EPpossieOG thanks for the post.

I'm not sure why you think I am hating Chris Davis (I was hating on the Fantasy 411 guys on MLB).  I said I liked Davis, just not as high as the Fantasy 411 guys indicated where he should be drafted.  I have him in a deep keeper league (loved him last year, have been watching him for long before that) and even drafted him in a seasonal 5x5 league for this year.  However unlike you say and what the guys on MLB said I didn't overpay for him.  I was able to get him in the 9th round of that yearly draft.

We are seeing first hand right now why he should not have gone as early as you seem to think and as early as MLB said to take him.  He is going to K a ton.  Yes, I knew that and so did almost everyone else.  Yes, he will be a nice keeper league player for years to come and has tons of power potential.  However he will not give you a better batting average than Ryan Howard.  I doubt Howard ever hits .300 again but he is a .280 to .285 hitter.  Davis will not be that in the Majors.

Davis has showed great potential thru every minor league stop but even down there he was striking out a lot.  I know full well what his combined numbers added up to last year but more players that have done well in the minors have never translated into that same player in the Majors therefore you can't include those numbers when trying to figure out exactly what a player will do in the Majors.  Another thing that always occurs in the Big's is Pitchers/Players adjust.  It happens all the time that we see a hitter or pitcher come up tearing things up only to see them come back to earth after their opposition has time to study them and plan accordingly.  I'll say it again... I do believe Davis has some monster power ability and he will get to a point where his average will be closer to .275 than .225 however until he adjusts to the adjustment that pitchers have made to him comparing him to Adam Dunn is much more correct than comparing him to Ryan Howard.

Again, thanks for the post but saying the guys from 411 that were on MLB were right on the money has me wondering about your opinion...  IMO.

Not sure where your hate is coming from with Chris Davis.  The guy is young and with plenty of upside although it's obvious he'll need to make adjustments going into his 1st full season.  Last season after being called up in the 2nd half, he batted .284 with 17HR's.  Combined with his stats in the minors for 2008, that would be a 40 HR's and a .308 AVG season.

I am in a 13 man 5x5 roto league.  We keep 4 keepers.  I opted to keep Chris Davis as my 4th keeper.  Why?  Because he has the potential to be a mini Ryan Howard (with a slightly less power) and with a better batting average.

Now in terms of what round I took him...well if we keep 4 keepers and there are 13 owners, that's 52 ' total picks'...which means that if I where to have drafted him in a draft starting from scratch, and since he was my last of 4 keepers, that would mean I would have taken him in the 4th round.

You also have to conisder that in smaller leagues there might be DH or a CI position as well as he would also be taken earlier than you suggested as his HR potential is better than many others...and he has hitting in that park.

MLB was right on the money IMO.

Yes I took in the comedy special too. I was sitting there wondering if the real fantasy guru's were tied up in a back room or something. Edwin Encarnacion to hit .300. I'll take that and give five to one. Alexi Ramirez given no respect. Come on guys he had a terrific season last year and when I last checked Encarnacion was little more than a fantasy tease. Closers? Closers! Closers. Man they are about as valuble in fantasy as are field goal kickers in the football fantasy game. And as reliable from season to season. Taking top catchers early. Great and pass on players that play more than 75 to 80 percent of major league games? I wonder if they think best available player or if they fill these much desired positions of catcher and closer.

Your right on the money thinking that you'd clean up being in a draft with guys that think like that. I know that there was more hilarious remarks but can't recall them now. Anyway the only consolation to me was that I had already drafted and really didn't feel like the show would have improved my draft one iota.
