What bothers you most about your favorite sport?

Posted on: March 17, 2009 1:58 pm

Every time I sit down to watch a sporting event something invariably happens that bothers me. I am not a difficult person and I don't make a habit of looking for the "bad things" in sports but I'm sure I am not the only one that feels this way. Here are a few of the things that grind my gears. I apologize if anything I say offends you - it is not meant to be malicious. Feel free to add to the list.

Basketball - A player makes (or misses) a free throw and has to slap hands with his teammates. (Just shoot the ball dummy.)

Football - A player makes a tackle, pounds his chest and runs toward the middle of the field. (Look at me, I tackled, I'm good!)

Hockey - Fighting (I know, it's a part of the game to hockey purists but no other sport allows it. Maybe they should in women's tennis!)

Baseball - The designated hitter. (If you can't hit, you don't belong here. What's next - a designated runner for guys that are slow?)

I replied before but the quote box screwed up!

That only bothers me if he misses the free throw. It feels like congratulations to me when they slap hands, so it seems inappropriate to slap hands with teammates if you missed. If you slap hands after making it, it's like "Alright, good job."

I don't have a problem with the players congratulating each other. It seems like half the time though, the player is in the lane ready to play patty cake before the ball has even doinked off the rim. Maybe they should bonk each other in the forehead if they miss.

Falsons21

Football- Guys who pick up a ball and then, when a whistle blows the play dead, run 40 yards downfield. Quit being jackasses. The play is over

Good point!

Baseball- The season is way too long...162 games just sucks any day-to-day drama from the sport. I'm supposed to be excited over a mid-May game between the Royals and Mariners?

Hockey- Fighting. If you want to watch two goons throw punches, go to a boxing match. I'll take watching skilled players do things that require, you know, skill

What bothers you most about your favorite sport?

i agree with your first comment, but not the second.

some games are slow, tedious and "boring" to most people.  if you truly enjoy all aspects of baseball, a long game never bothers you, especially if you have a team in the game.  I have had this discussion with many of my friends and most of them appreciate the fact that there is no timer or time limit in baseball.  This takes away stalling and other time manipulation strategies. Basically, there is no getting around actually playing the game.

What bothers you most about your favorite sport?

Basketball - I cannot stand that players replace talent with fundamentals.  I understand that you may be a lights out 3 point shooter, but that doesnt mean you can backpedal down the court with your hand in the cookie jar.  FOLLOW YOUR SHOT!

Baseball - any lack of hustle to first base, no matter where you hit the ball.

Football - the drama with all the league crybabies and princesses

Hockey - i actually have no complaints about this sport.  Of course this is the sport i follow least.

Nascar- Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick are nice now.

Just give him some time and Tony Stewart will say something stupid or try to wreck someone that pisses him off. Then he'll be mean again!

Basketball-I hate the 3-point shot. It has ruined basketball! I understand the philosophy (more points, more excitment, a team is not of it as long as they are within 10-15 points). Those are all good reasons, but TOO many teams rely on it too much. If a team is hot from 3, they can beat any one regardless of the talent or execution from the other team. If a team is cold from 3 and continues to put it up, well you know. Live by the 3, die by the 3? BS. What ever happened to preparation and execution. Maybe a little post play or pick and roll. Now it's just cross mid court and let it fly...

NASCAR-The Chase. For over 50 years the most consitently good team over the whols season won the championship. Now a team can be average (or at least top 12 average), make the chase, then win 5 or 6 of the last 7 and win the title-ala Jimmie Johnson.

Football-BCS. Nuf said.

Baseball-Everything. Boring. I just don't get it, never have, never will.

Football- 40 yard bomb with the prayer of a PI call... Ref always caves in.

Baseball- Home Plate Umpires all have their own interpretation of the strike zone.
