Duke Daily 8/02 Who's Who With Duke?

Posted on: August 2, 2009 8:18 pm

As the first few editions come to a close, more are to come, and today is one of them.  Nolan Smith started most of last year, then became the sixth man, what will he be doing this year?

Nolan Smith is a sure thing starting point guard for Duke this year, and I really have no questions as to why.  First of all, Duke has a seldom amount of guards, not only that but Smith is an excellent defender and is willing to take a few hits for the team.  Much like last year's Henderson, Smith posses that quick first step neccassary to drive the lane and his a mean cross over.  All his life he has been a high scoring player who's main strenght is his defense, in previous entries I have pondered his conditioning and whether or not he could handle so many minutes, but Coach K has no doubt that Smith is his guy.  But one thing that Coach K might emphasize most about this young athlete is his ability to gracefully swith positions, being able to play the two guard and run the point.

So who is Nolan Smith for Duke?  Nolan Smith will most certaintly stand up and attempt to lead this team, as he will surely be the starting point guard.  If he can steer clear of turnovers.... watch out!

Duke Daily 8/02 Who's Who With Duke?

I think Nolan Smith will have too much pressure on his shoulders the beginning of the year for Duke.  I mean it will be "his team" this year and he will try too hard in my opinion.  Wojo really needs to take this kid aside and relax him the best he can.  I think his offensive production will go down due to Smith focusing too much on making the correct pass and dribbling away from a double team.  I think Smith will fall back into being more of a defender then scorer.  Even though he really needs to do BOTH!

Duke Daily 8/02 Who's Who With Duke?

The biggest surge of success that last year's team enjoyed was when Scheyer played the one. The one will often get a little more space and gets quick passes back. This is key for a guy that is too slow to create much space and too narrow to finish around the basket.
The team's perimeter defense is always good. Neither guy is responsible for the god awful interior defense, so I would prefer Scheyer as the one.

The Blue Devils are probably thinking the same thing, as both players have the ability to play both guard positions.  Scheyer will paly one half of his minutes most likely.

Check out the new blog entry about Scheyer himself.

I think anytime u make that jump to the leader of teh team there are going to be struggles, but it is Duke after all, I think he will surprise people, and I expect duke to reach the Elite 8 nxt year, but personally my opinion shouldn't matter that much since college Basketball is my least knowledgable of the sports I watch and I actually don't care for Duke or N.Carolina, jusat my thoughtsHe really will suprise people, no one realized he was a double digit scorer last year and one of our top defenders.

nice job CC but i dont think Duke has a shot to win the ACC this year, Coach K is a amazing coach but i just dont see it happening maybe in a couple of years if everyone stays around and no one leaves, i also have to agree on Smith i think he will lead the team but the Tarheels are still the same even with them losing everyone but who knows thats why they play the game

Thanks, but yes, really I think it depends on how Duke does in non conference match ups againsted ranked teams, the seniors should do a great job, and if they beat ranked teams before conference play they'll have an awful load of confidence. And like you said... Who knows?

Please comment on how you think Smith will do as well.

assists should come easy if they spread the floor like they do and let him penetrate with the options of going to the rim if it's open, obviously, and if the D collapses of course kick it out to the perimeter
They should and they probably won't.

Watching almost every Duke game last year.  They would have two guys on the perimeter then Smith would bring it up. Lob a pass to one guy on the perimeter.  Then as soon as that guy got the ball he would fire a bullet to a usually wide open man on the perimeter to shoot the three.
