Preseason Mid-Major Top 25

2009-2010

Following my preseason top 25 for 2009-2010, I have made a preseason mid-major top 25.  I have spent a good amount of time researching each team, and my rankings are not just based on players from each team or this past season.  There have been a good bit of mid-major players declare for the draft, and I have taken that into consideration.  These rankings are based on Shawn Taggart of Memphis, Stephen Curry of Davidson, and Patrick Mills of Saint Mary’s staying in the draft.  I will update the rankings at some point after the draft declaration deadline (April 26).  Feel free to critique or ask questions to why I ranked each team or didn’t rank a team.

Another VCU is still in good shape and are returning most of the players including Joey Rodriguez, Larry Sanders, Brandon Rozzell, etc. Rodriguez was gonna transfer but he changed his mind. Even though Anthony Grant is going to Alabama and is in the hands of new coach Shaka Smart. This team is still in good shape to defend their CAA championship. I have to say this if Larry Sanders puts in some work next season, I could see this guy jumping to the NBA after the season. They should be in the Top 25.

TIMEOUT, TIMEOUT. Memphis is no 17 and you put LaSalle, Portland, and Georgia State ahead of them? Wow, I mean we don't know how the Tigers will do with Pastner after the Coach Cal era. Tulsa will be the team to challenge the Tigers for the C-USA but I don't think Memphis is done yet. They'll still be good but not dominate. Gonzaga should be number 2 instead of Xavier. Sean Miller is going to Arizona and I don't know this Chris Mack. Butler I can see as the number 1 mid-major team because of the top three scorers in Matt Howard, Gordon Hayward and Shelvin Mack. Horizon League will be dominated by the Butler Bulldogs.

Not Bad. I would agree with most but it will look different in the end I think. I dont think Nevada will be as good as you think. New coach and a couple people have also left the team and one very disgruntled player that they will not release.

BYU is always good and should be good this year as well with Tavernari returning but.......

Maybe I am missing something but I am most surprised that I dont see San Diego State on here. I know they lost a couple seniors but they have some experience coming back plus they have picked up a couple top 100 players and a couple transfers that should be real good and they had a nice run last year in the NIT.

UNLV is probably running under everyones radar once again because of the down year they had last year but they look real good on paper right now. Lots of size in the guard and forward spots.

Utah St. is one of those teams that nobody wants to play even though they never seem to get any top players and this year they look to be better than last year.

The Dayton Flyers are gonna be the top mid-major by the end of the season. We have everyone but one guy coming back (Charles Little). We have two post players coming in that are local talents that can definitely score the ball and thats one of the biggest boost we could get. I like mid-major basketball teams. I think more should get into the tourny instead of an #7 ACC team. Utah St. was great last year and took Marquette to the wire in the tourny. Losing Wilkinson will hurt a little but not too much I dont think. Good luck next season I will definitely keep my eye on these mid-majors!

Watch out for Utah State after the big 30 win season last year.  They only lost one Senior in Gary Wilkinson and return four starters including three who averaged double digits in ppg.  Stew Morrill has made a living by taking players nobody else wanted and turning them into a winning team.  They'll get their 11th straight 20-win season and another WAC championship on Nevada's home floor.

WKU will be an exciting team next season, but as of right now they are just slightly behind a few mid-major teams.

I will be releasing a new mid-major top 25 soon, I'm sure there will be a lot of changes.

Cleveland State also loses Cedric Jackson, who was one of the top defenders in the nation, a statement that he proved by forcing Jeff Teague into 7 turnovers in the NCAA tourney.  They have a great coach and do return some talented players, so we'll have to see what they make out of it next season.

So long as Dana Altman is the head coach at Creighton, I will always count on them to be a competetive mid-major squad.  UNI returns there whole team, and when I watched them play Purdue in the tourney they impressed me.

Preseason Mid-Major Top 25 for 2009-2010

As a Horizon league homer, I am glad to see Butler at #1.  However, if they were 2 or 3, I wouldn't really complain either.  All of their talent is returning, so they are definitely set up for success.

I'd have liked to see Cleveland State on the list, but that is a homer pick.  I don't really know anything about Georgia State, Portland, Binghamton or Boston University, so can't really say whether or not Cleveland State belongs on the list.  They did lose J'Nathan Bullock, but they are still returning a considerable amount of talent.

Glad to see Green Bay not on the list.  They are losing the bulk of their scoring and there is no reason for them to even consider being a top 25 midmajor.

I do have reservations about Northern Iowa and Creighton though... the MVC is notorious for one and done teams.  Teams like Drake and Bradley that have a phenominal season and then go to crap the next year.  It's been pretty rare as of late for an MVC team to have consecutive good seasons.

Utah State should be interesting.  Don't really know much about them, but I wasn't really sold on them this year.

One team not on the list that could be a sleeper is Vermont.  They were quiet this year, but they are traditionally pretty decent.  Not really sure what their roster is looking like next year, but I never count them out.  VCU and VMI could be decent too, historically speaking, but again, not really sure what their rosters are looking like.

I think the Hilltoppers should be higher. They are only losing Mendez-Valdez and return a ton of talent. #3 at least IMO.

Chowertime, I looked on your profile and sure enough you are an Xavier fan.  Xavier is the number 1 mid-major team in the nation at reloading after every successful year and returning the next season with a team just as good, but Butler returns EVERY player from last year's team and has locked up their coach to a new contract, while Xavier can't exactly say the same.  Derrick Brown has NBA ready talent, and he may go pro, while Butler has locked up their team for next season.
