Giants OL Rich Seubert in Cast, Broken Bone

Posted on: August 6, 2010 2:37 pm

New York Giants offensive lineman Rich Seubert has a broken bone in his left hand and will miss some time. The early reports say he will miss at least one week but it could be longer. Seubert already has a large cast on his right hand and forearm and when asked about it, he said to “ask coach about it”. Tom Coughlin has said he will talk to reporters about this following the afternoon practice today which concludes at 4:35 PM EST. Today is also the Giants autograph night in Albany, so Coughlin might not get to speak until around 5:00 PM EST.

Nobody knows how Seubert got his injury or exactly how long he will be out of action. I’m not familiar with the bones in the hand, all I know is that there are a lot of them in there. I find it hard to believe that No.69 will only miss a week of practice but I hope that turns out to be the case. OL William Beatty is battling for the starting OT spot, which many believe will slide David Diehl to OG, putting Seubert in the position of possibly becoming a backup. OL Shaun O’Hara has also been on the sideline for a while now with a nagging ankle injury. Both of these guys are veterans and they will be back on the field at some point.

You just hate to see the Giants dealing with so many injuries following the 2009 season, which was plagued by injuries the entire season. Having two out of the five starting offensive lineman injured right now is enough to make a Giants fan rip the hair out of their head.

Giantsr1eva-

Injuries happen and as you said it is above the waist.Very True Yogi. Players get injured and we have to deal with it.

I remember the injuries last year and how Bill Sheridan didn't become a 'bad' DC until the team went south after a 5-0 start.
You have to remember, when we were 5-0, we beat the Chiefs, Raiders, Tampa Bay, and the Redskins, you know the teams that my throw up could beat. I still don't know how we beat Dallas.

Hmm, did we ruin Dallas season?

Dallas 13-3, number 1 seed.

Divisional Round
Dallas vs Arizona
Saints vs Minnesota,

Dallas vs Saints
Dallas over Saints.

Dallas over Colts.

Dallas would have been Super Bowl Champions.

Wow, one team can ruin another team, nice job Giants.  Well, I guess people can't say that the Cowboys ruined our season because it looks like we ruined theirs.

Take that Dallas. Tongue out
That said Fewell gets a clean slate, make us proud.
Not exactly, he still has to prove that he can win with this team before he gets respect.

And I do agree with Mock King U, the young must replace the old.

lookout, I'm going to go with you.  Injuries happen and as you said it is above the waist. Shubert will be limited, but if he was meant to start he will.  Four weeks till KO, I like Perry Fewell's intensity and the apparent reach he has with he players.  It is early and this team as
still got questions.  I remember the injuries last year and how Bill Sheridan didn't become a 'bad' DC until the team went south after a 5-0 start.  The Giants were never as good as 5-0 and they were better than 8-8.  Some times it is the injurys and the wrong guys pay the price.  That said Fewell gets a clean slate, make us proud.

Hey lookout, The O-line is the oldest group of men on the team, I did a story about that a while back. You're right about them and it is inevitable that the young will replace the old. I would just like to see them go out on their own terms and not due to injury. Two out of five are injured already. Seubert might need surgery and O'Hara still has his ankle issues. If Beatty and Petrus need to step up, then so be it.

Hey Charlie, you make a good point. I keep going over the roster and looking at the possibilities. I agree that if the situation should arise, they should give the kid a shot. The injuries just keep coming as Steve Smith and a couple of other players got hurt today. I'll have to review ti all before writing anything. Now they are saying Seubert might need surgery and all of that. OL William Beatty is ready in my opinion but I hate to see Richie going out like that.

One positive.........if any area of the team HAD to have an injury or two, it was the O-line.  Petrus may have to play a bit more during the exhibition games, and that sure isn't a bad thing.  See if the guy can play (I think he DEFINITELY can).

It was his hand, and the way they wrap themselves up, it won't be as bad if an O-line guy hurts a leg.  It's when they can't move around is when it's a bad thing.........

Hey, Mock U - not to make light of an injury, but don't forget about rookie G Mitch Petrus.  That guy is nasty and plays with attitude.  I hate the injury, but it does give the rookie the opportunity to show what he's made of.  Also, we did sign several undrafted rookie O-lineman for depth as we did need to get younger on that part of the team.

That being said, the injuries are frustrating because they happen every single year on this team.  Either a new practice strategy is needed, or a new strengthening & conditioning staff.
