Detroit won by 2 in the first 2 games. Pittsburgh won by 2 in the next 2. Goals are even (5 apiece). The series is even at 2. A bunch of other stats are even, too. Let's go to the table:
Stats are shown Pittsburgh/Detroit
                    PIM         FO           Shots        Hits
Game 1:    2/4          16/39      32/30        32/33
Game 2:    21/7        27/24      32/26        36/17
Game 3:    4/6          23/24      21/29        33/34
Game 4:    10/8        26/34      31/39        39/43

Total:         37/25      92/121    116/114   140/127

But the PIM totals need to be adjusted. At the end of game 2 (20 seconds left), 5 minutes were given to Detroit, and 14 were given to Pittsburgh (one was a 10 minute GM). Since there was so little time left, they weren't really served, so let's discount those. The new PIM totals are 23/20.

The Pens have 1 shorthanded goal to Detroit's 0. Hardly enough of a difference.

The Pens have 4 PPG's to Detroit's 1. That makes up for the faceoff difference.

After all that math, it looks like everything is pretty much even (except the number of games left in the series). Still the slight majority of people would probably tell you that Detroit is a better team (contrary to a very loud slight minority). After all that work, though, we're basically back to the start. Amazing how these things work out sometimes, huh?

Stanley Cup Finals - Almost Everything Is Even

In game 5 the Pens got 48 penalty minutes and Detroit got 14, so that blows that one up in favor of Detroit. Here are the other totals that change:

Power Play Goals: 4/4
Hits: 175/169
Shots: 138/143
FO: 116/142
Goals: 10/15
Wins (and goals per game): 2/3

The numbers still look pretty even if you haven't watched any of the games. Unfortunately a lot of people did watch the games, so it looks like Detroit has found their groove and Pittsburgh has a hard row to hoe. I barely expect seven games and don't expect a win for Pittsburgh. I hope for both.

After the game 5 slaughtering, the numbers are probably not so even now, eh? Imagine if the Wings had had Datsyk for the first 4 games... This series would be over - maybe even a Wings sweep. I'm predicting the wings in six games now.
