NFL Power Rankings (Week 0)

Posted on: September 10, 2009 5:04 pm

Just in time for the start of the season, my final preseason thoughts:

1) Patriots – There are some valid questions being asked about the defense. I still don’t think all of that matters because golden boy Tom Brady is back playing QB, and has more weapons then in 2007.
2) Steelers – The Defending Super Bowl Champions still have the best defense in the league. Their offense is good enough, but Big Ben is still not an elite QB.
3) Giants – It’s a toss up between the Giants and Eagles for the top spot in the NFC. The Giants get that spot until the Eagles prove they can be an elite team. Significant additions to the defense strengthen an already “lights out” unit.
4) Eagles – This team was loaded on offense before Michael Vick even showed up. McNabb has gotten the weapons he asked for. The defense looks a little different now, but look for new DC Sean McDermott’s unit to make strides throughout the season.
5) Vikings- Brett Favre does not significantly improve Minnesota’s quarterback situation. But it might be enough to push this team over the top. Favre’s presence takes some pressure off Adrian Peterson.
6) Chargers – A team that has been on the brink of greatness for the last half decade. San Diego finally might be able to put it all together with Rivers, Tomlinson, Sproles, and Merriman. A very good team playing in a very weak division.
7) Falcons – Ryan and Turner were the breakout stars of last year’s season. This team is only going to get better with perennial Pro-Bowler Tony Gonzalez.
8) SaintsDrew Brees is a passing machine, but can Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas get it done on the ground? New additions should help the defense, but that defense still has a lot to prove after an abysmal effort last year.
9) Colts – The Colts may no longer be a juggernaut on offense, but this is still a very good football team. There is enough veteran leadership here to transition out of the Tony Dungy era without much of a problem.
10) Panthers – One of the best rushing attacks in the NFL. Can Delhomme finally get it together?
11) Texans – Houston is ready to break out this year. There is enough talent on this team to not only make the playoffs, but to challenge Indianapolis for the division.
12) PackersAaron Rodgers is already good enough to be Green Bay’s next franchise quarterback.  The switch to 3-4 should improve the play of the defense.
13) Ravens – A good team that snuck into the playoffs last year. Ray Lewis and Ed Reed continue to lead a strong defense. The unretirement of Derrick Mason gives Flacco a target to work with.
14) Titans – The bottom line is, this team will not be as good without Albert Haynesworth. Kerry Collins isn’t getting any younger, and Vince Young isn’t getting any better.
15) Jets – Rex Ryan, Bart Scott, and friends should give the Jets the most improved defense over last year. Sanchez should bring some stability to the quarterback position.
16) Bears – They finally have a quarterback. Jay Cutler still doesn’t make Chicago a great team, because he has no one to throw to.
17) Redskins – Washington has the potential for a top 3 defense this year. Problem is the offense still isn’t good enough for this team to challenge the best.
18) Bengals – Chad Johnson is going to have a comeback season. Carson Palmer is still a great quarterback. This team should improve over the troubles of last season.
19) Seahawks – Another team ready for a turn around from last season. Houshmandzadeh should help out Hasselback a lot.
20) Dolphins – If NFL defenses figure out how to defend the Wildcat, this team is in a lot of trouble.
21) Cardinals – Don’t look for this team to repeat last year’s playoff success. They still have no running game, and the defense is still unproven.
22) 49ers – This team has a lot of potential, but doesn’t quite have it all together yet.
23) Cowboys – No doubt T.O. is locker room cancer, but no one on this team can replace his production.
24) Raiders – This team has a lot of talent of both sides of the ball. The Raiders will finally win some games this year.
25) Bills – See above about T.O. How will this team fare on the T.O. merry-go-round?
26) Buccaneers – Quarterback musical chairs will plaque this team for another year.
27) Chiefs – Matt Cassell may be the real deal, but that’s not enough for this team.
28) Jaguars – Everything about this team was inconsistent last year. Don’t expect that to change.
29) Browns – This team is still full of question marks.
30) Broncos – Josh McDaniel ruined this team for a long time.
31) Lions – Detroit had a good draft, and the rebuilding will begin.
32) Rams – They were bad last year, and didn’t get any better.

I agree, Baltimore at 13 you are an idiot. Next time you do your rankings you might want to try it sober. Just a suggestion.

NFL Power Rankings (Week 0)

Eagles are not #4

they still have McNabb - a 75 rated quarterback that does not deliver in the clutch - team needs a better qb in order to get back to the Superbowl... will do as always - win a few more than they lose and DROP out at playoff time.... looks like about 9 wins this year

not a real good team - slightly above average like their quarterback

What will the "TO-less" Cowboys have to show in week one to get them into the top 16 of your rankings?
I also agree with some of the other posters in their amazement of where you put the Super Bowl runner-up Cards.  They are still solid, even though they MIGHT not repeat.  But they deserve more respect based on how they finished the year last year.
Other than those two, and I know it's still early, I appreciate the list and cannot really tear it apart.

Man, I can't wait for the season the start!!!!

Broncos at 30 is just plain idiotic!  That is just an opinion made from someone who has had their brain thouroghly washed by all the media haters.  All the Cutler garbage turned people wacky on the Broncos, and we will be the surprise team of the NFL this year.

AGAIN NO RESPECT FOR THE CARDINALS

THEY DID BEAT YOUR CHOKING EAGLES AS WELL AS  CAROLINA AND ATLANTA, AND DESERVE TO BE HIGHER....
AFTER ALL THEY ARE THE DEFENDING NFC CHAMPS UNTIL SOMEONE BEATS THEM

I GOT A GREAT IDEA !!!

SWITCH THE EAGLES WITH THE CARDINALS - YOUR BOYS DID CHOKE AND NOW YOU GOT A DOG CHOKER ON YOUR TEAM
YA - EAGLES 21ST  AND CARDINALS 4TH...........

I don't know why everyone is freaking out, because I think this is a pretty unbiased and good piece of writing. I think there may be a few errors here and there, but overall pretty good.

NFL Power Rankings (Week 0)

Not trying to discredit your team at all. The fun thing about sports blogs, message boards, and the articles that sports writers are paid to write, and especially preseason rankings / predictions, it's all someone's opinion. No team has played any games yet. There are no stats yet to back up anyone's preseason rankings. Maybe the Lions will go 16-0 this year and have the best team. Keeping that in mind, it's only my opinion that the Patriots with Tom Brady back are a better team then the defending champion Steelers.
