This is Part 2 in a Trilogy of Blog posts called Just How Good on how amazing UF football will be in the 2009-2010 season

Obvious Knowledge:
  1. The average football fan knows that a team puts out 11 players on offense and 11 players on defense at one time for an 11 on 11 game.
  2. Players in NCAAF are in college and subsequently, graduate.
  3. The University of Florida Gators won the 2008 National Championship.
Now Just imagine..... The Florida Gators returning say, 8 starters on defense and losing a few studs. That would still be a great defense with players getting older and maturing. Now imagine them returning all 11. Dang, what a thought, a NC winning Defense returning all 11 starters! Now, if you can even begin to fathom this, imagine that same National Champion team who returned 11 starters also returning another 11 players so their defense goes 2 deep with proven, talented players. You have just imagined the 2009 Florida Gators. WOW! Our defense this year not only returns all 11 starters, it also returns all 11 second stringers.

To Lead our defense is the #1 Linebacker in the country, Senior Brandon Spikes. Spikes is 6-3 and weighs 243 pounds, but is lightning fast and hits harder than Mike Tyson and Brian Urlacher combined!

Over his three years at UF, Spikes has played in 35 games, and started in 27 of them. He has accumulated 239 tackles over the three year span. 25 tackles for a loss, 3.5 QB sacks, and 4 picks (two returned for a TD). Spikes was named a team captain as a junior in 2008. In a game against Miami last year Spikes had 11 tackles!11!

Going into his Junior Year, Joe Haden has been ranked as high as #12 in CB's in the country. Last year Haden started all 14 games at CB and in 2007 became the first freshman to start for UF at corner in UF history. Last year he had 87 tackles and that was second best on the team! He had 10 tackles in the BCS National Championship game alone! Last year he had 3 picks and 1 forced fumble. Coming out of high-school in 2006 he was a QB and ranked 3rd amongst athletes in his class.

Ahmad Black is also going into his Jr. year and started all 14 games last year at SS (Strong Safety). Black had a critical, game saving INT against Oklahoma in the National Championship. He had a total of 7 Picks last year which was tied for most in the country. As a Sophomore, he got his first career start against Hawaii in the 2008 season opener. He, in that game alone, had two picks, one returned for his first career TD. Against Bama in the SEC championship game he recorded 7 tackles which was career high. He had done that once before in his two-year tenure at UF.

So yah! That was just three starters on a team that returned 22 players, going 2 deep, on defense from a NC winning season!

I have a feeling that scoring against us is going to pose a problem for our opponents

Quarterbacks, Wide Receivers, Running Backs, Tight Ends, and Offensive Lineman watchout!

because...

heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
eeeeRRRRRRReeeeeeeeeeeee  Come the Gators!!!!!!!!

Just How Good, Part 2, Defense

Returning 2 deep on defense is unheard of. It must be a Florida thing because if you think back to the 2 basketball Championships we also returned our 6 top players from that team. We will be good, very good. We have the best coaches in america.
