Why Not A Superbowl Saturday?

Posted on: February 7, 2010 12:39 pm
Superbowl Sunday, a day filled with euphoria for every sports fan, but every year a recipe for a miserable Monday.  Superbowl Saturday sounds every bit as good and would alleviate the usual fallout experienced by poor planning.  The NFL is the most progressive league of all the major sports.  They have historically been proactive to combat issues ranging from affirmative action to steroids.  Yet, this progressive league fails to recognize that the biggest game of the year creates a problem far bigger than a Janet Jackson clothing “malfunction”.

In a time when our economy is struggling and people are doing the best just to hang on to their jobs, employers can’t afford to deal with the economic burden placed on them due to the Superbowl.  Put aside the $3 million for a 30 second spot, that is not the issue here or even the fact that employers lose approximately $850 million in the week leading up to the big game because little can be done by the league.  The problem is the $150 million businesses lose as a result of the 1.5 million employees calling out sick or the over 4 million employee who show up late on the Monday after the game.

Even crazier are cities who have teams in the big game are now cancelling school the following day so kids can stay up and watch the game.  What are we teaching our children?  Move the game NFL and allow your fans to enjoy a Super Saturday without the consequences of a Miserable Monday.

Why Not A Superbowl Saturday?

Can't even begin to tell you how many times I have thought about this very subject.  I think it is a great idea along many different fronts.  Let's have a massive petition and deliver it to the Commish.  Goodell I think.  Shoot maybe it's not the correct titile.  So, Saturday it should be and I am all for a grass roots organization to make it happen!!!!

Why Not A Superbowl Saturday?

I agree 100%.  Why not Saturday?  I'd be willing to be that all of the ancillary businesses that benefit from the Super Bowl (bars, grocery stores, liquor stores, etc) would see even more of a boost if the game was on a Saturday.  Not to mention it'd also create more water cooler talk on Monday morning because almost everyone would've stayed up to watch the whole game.

This could also be said for the NFC/AFC Championship games.

Why Not A Superbowl Saturday?

Superbowl Saturday is long overdue...I'm not quite sure what the NFL is thinking other than Sunday is NFL football day (for the most part).  This would let many fans relax and not have to worry about getting up for work the next day.  It may also bring in additional viewers that go to bed early on Sunday Night.  It would also let me have a few additonal beers while I'm watching the  Superbowl Saturday Feb. 5, 2011 would sure be nice.

Why Not A Superbowl Saturday?

Or they could proclaim Monday a national holiday, but I think a Saturday game is definitely the easier of the two to do.
