After 1pm ET games Week 13

Posted on: December 6, 2009 5:57 pm

* New Orleans clinched the NFC South division title

* MINN can clinch NFC North with Win tonight vs ARIZ + GB loss Monday night.
A MINN win tonight will get them at least a playoff berth.  Also, a tie and a NYG loss today will get the Vikings a playoff spot.

* Indy has already clinched the AFC South and will not clinch a first round bye this week.
HOWEVER, IND can clinch homefield advantage hroughout the playoffs with a win at home week 14 vs DEN.

* CIN can clinch the AFC North division title with a WIN next week at MINN and one BALT loss either this Monday night at GB OR next week vs. DET

Much more to come later...

SabreMax:

The Chiefs are indeed eliminated, but it's more complicated than simply the Jags H2H over KC, as KC could use a third team to jump JAC.  However, because of the remaining MIA/JAC, MIA/PIT, and PIT/BAL games, it is impossible for KC to win a multiple-way tiebreak as well.  Since a win or tie against MIA will give JAC a better record than KC could get, MIA must win that game, but that puts MIA at 7 wins.  Thus, a win or tie against PIT by MIA will give MIA a better record than KC could get, so PIT must beat MIA.  Using the same logic, BAL must beat PIT.  Under this scenario, BAL will win the tiebreak with a 7-5 record.  Thus, you are correct that KC is eliminated, but it is a little more complicated than the simple H2H with JAC.

packfan...you're thinking too hard with respect to the Redskins.  The best they can do is 7-9, which is the worst the Giants can do and is worse than DAL or PHI can do.  NYG wins the divisional tiebreaker against WAS, so WAS is locked into the 4th spot in their division.  A team must finish in the top 3 of its division in order to make the playoffs, so you don't even need to look at the Packers matchup.

Just like to add the Kansas City Chiegs an the Washington Redskins are eliminated. The Chiefs at 3-9 are eliminated because even if they win out and Jacksonville loses out the Jaguars won the Head to Head tiebreaker. The Redskins are eliminated becuse even if the Redskins win out and the Packers lose out the Redskins are eliminated because of the conference tiebreaker. The Redskins can only finish with a conference record of 4-8 while the Packers can finish with a conference record of 6-6.

Haven't the Redskins and Chiefs been eliminated from playoff contention? Maybe the seedings page hasnt been fully updated yet, but this is what I get when I run through the tiebreakers...

The Redskins are 3-9 (2-8 NFC, 0-4 Div). They can only tie the Packers record for the 6th seed at this point. If the Redskins win out they would be 4-8 in the NFC, but the Packers already have a 6-3 NFC record and the worse they could do is 6-6. I also checked to see if maybe they could use the Giants to jump the Packers, but the best they could do in their division is 2-4 while the worse the Giants could do is 3-3.

In the Chiefs situation they could only catch the Jaguars and Ravens at 7-9, but the Jaguars and Ravens both have head to head wins over the Chiefs.

Chargers are the second seed because they have a better conference record (7-3) to Bengals (6-3). The tiebreaker goes h2h, then conference record. Everything else is correct.
