Best and worst trophies in sports

So many sports championships out there.  Some give out great prizes that make you want to run faster, hit harder, or spin quickly in the air just for the opportunity to touch the thing.  Others are a complete waste.  Here is my list of best and worst trophies.
#1: The Olympic Gold Medal.  Nothing says "I am the best in the world" better than a pound of gold hanging around your neck.  This is not something you set on a shelf and forget about:  this is something meant to be worn so all the world can see.  Have two or three?  Wear them all!  Silver and Bronze are great too - 4th place just plain stinks.   (A subtle note: even though athletes compete as countries, the medals are personal).
#2:  The Stanley Cup.  No, I don't really know who "Lord Stanley" is; and I don't care.  Frankly, I don't even like hockey.  But that trophy is the best around:  It's instantly recognizable.  I love that it has names on it that go clear back to the ABA days (or whatever they called minor league hockey a hundred years ago).  And I love the fact that there is only one trophy, not a whole set of them in trophy cases all around the continent.  They don't even call it the NHL Playoffs - it's the "Stanley Cup."  And skating the cup? Priceless.
#3:  The Superbowl Ring.  I've always thought it was pretty lame that, after a group of guys hit, run, push, and crunch their way to one of sport's highest pinnacles, the Superbowl, that the owner, some guy sitting in the booth, gets to hoist the trophy - which presumably goes into his office never to be seen by anyone making less than $500K.  But the ring?  That belongs to the player.  He wears it for life.  When he's 90 and junior is sitting on his lap - he can show him the ring.  No other sport has that.  (And you've got plenty of fingers to try for another one.
#1:  The Green Jacket.  Of course, winning the Masters is the ultimate in golf.  You achieve that, and they give you - a blazer?  And a green one at that - something you'd laugh to find at Goodwill.  At best it says "we're part of a snobby country club that YOU will never be a part of."  Do they let "those" people in?  Century 21 Real Estate gives the "gold jacket," the Masters - the green.  I think the real estate agents get the better deal.
#2:  The NCAA "Plaque".  With as many a 256 teams competing, winning an NCAA Championship is one of the toughest things to acheive.  Have you ever seen a team tote around the trophy they get for winning an NCAA Championship?  It looks like the wooden plaque you ordered a "Joes Trophy Shop" down the street.  Ugh.  (And don't get me started on the trophy they DON'T give in football)
#3:  The World Series Trophy.  It's a bunch of flags in a circle.  Looks pretty delicate to me.  This one belongs lost in some manager's trophy case.

Nice list!  My personal preference would be to put the Stanley Cup at #1; I'm not a hockey fan either but the Cup is just cool--especially since, as you said, there is only one, and the stories of what players have done with it are simply unrivaled in any other sport.  I also don't think the Superbowl rings should be on the list because . . . well, they're not trophies!  And they're not the only rings; NBA and MLB also give championship rings.  I would replace them at #3 with the Heisman.

As for the worst, the World Series is pretty bad, but not bad enough to be #3.  The Wimbledon cafetaria tray is awful.  So are the boxing belts--besides the fact that there are so many boxing "authorities" handing them out, the belts look like something Boss Hogg might have worn to his prom.  Also, soccer's World Cup Trophy is just plain old ugly.

I like the belts as well.

They should give each member of the super bowl a championship belt that they can take the field with it every game the next season.

Great point on the Wimbledon "serving platter".  I think if you win multiple titles you should get matching accessories.  Maybe a tea set or some BBQ tongs.

The Stanley Cup hasn't gotten any bigger.  Every ten years they remove the bottom level and add a new one for more winners.  It's been the same size for decades.

Great list!

I would have the World Champ boxing belt on my list of coolest trophies.  Only problem is that there are so many sanctioning bodies that it gets diluted with multiple champs in each weight class.

Personally, I like the Stanley Cup as the best.  As far as the worst, the list is long.  How about that silver meat platter they give you for winning Wimbledon.  Seems like they would present your with something a little more regal than that in the presence of royalty.  The Green Jacket just means that you now belong to a club that up until Tiger came on the scene wouldn't have let African - Americans in the door except for The Masters tournament.  But speaking of golf, The Claret Jug deserves an honorable mention for the best.  After all, The Open Championship always has all the best golfers in the world in it.  And I agree about the NCAA plaques.  They are kind of lame.  But the BCS Trophy is rather nice though.  I also agree with Olympic medals.  Not just gold, but silver or bronze as well.  There is nothing like competing for your country.

You win a ring for winning the NBA championship and the World Series.  Personally I find the World Series rings better looking than the SuperBowl rings.

How about the blanket of roses for winning the Kentucky Derby.  Flowers in the springtime is a nice touch besides its something that the real athlete in this event can munch on after the victory.

You also get a unique ring for the World Series. Good try trying to make a point though.
