Sneaky, but Serious MVP Contender

In the National League their is a young outfielder you may not all give credit too, or realize how good he really is. Carlos Gonzalez has been a monster for the Colorado Rockies this year, you may not know much about him since he plays for the smaller market Rockies. Cargo (The nickname given to him by Rockies fans) has been red hot the last few weeks, and his season stats show it. Cargo hit for the cycle July 31st, and to finish the cycle he hit the walkoff homerun. Almost no better way to end a game and complete a cycle like that in my opinion.

Carlos is number two (.321), behind only Joey Votto (.326) for first place in batting average in the National league (as of August 1st.) Cargo is top 8 in the National League in RBI's (68) and is a threat to steal a base every time he's on the base paths (15). Carlos can do it all, whether it's steal a bag, hit a homerun (Not just little homeruns, mosterous ones), or make a Gold Glove type defensive play. Carlos will be a 30-30 threat for years to come.

With all of this being said here is how Cargo's numbers look through 92 games on the regualar season.

Carlos Gonzalez - Average: .321 - Homeruns: 21 - RBI's: 68 - SB's: 15 - Runs: 67

On Pace for

150 Games - .321 Average - 34 Homeruns - 111 RBI's - 109 Runs - 24 SB's - and 201 Hits.

If that is not MVP caliber numbers I don't know what is. As long as Carlos keeps on pounding the ball like he has been the last month, he'll be close to the top if not the top in NL MVP voting.

Other Stats

.337 AVG. with Runners in Scoring Position (RISP)

Cargo ranks among the top 10 in the NL in these catagories -  AVG (2) RBI's (6) SLG (5) HR (10) Runs (6) OPS (10)

1.000 FPCT in 48 games at CF.

Gonzalez has 1 error in 92 games this season.

Cargo isn't just a threat for MVP, but also a Gold Glove. 1 error is 92 games is great, and gives him a shot at winning a Gold Glove. This is my case at giving Carlos Gonzalez a serious shot at winning the NL MVP, award and maybe a Gold Glove too. Cargo is a "Sneaky, but Serious MVP Contender"

Jaysta, since when is Denver a "small-market team?"

Not at all my friend, not at all. Didn't realize you were from the area. Cool! I think it's more of my frustration with the East and West Coast biases and the national media for that matter (ESPN) not recognizing the talent out here, save Buster Olney. Buster picked the Rox/Yankees in the preseason for the World Series and stayed with his prediction during the All Star break with the Rox winning it all. Let's hope he's right on! MUST take three out of four in Pittsburgh and two of three in NY vs. the Mets. Then, let's see if we close the 5.5 game deficit to the Wild Card leading Giants and the 6.5 game deficit to SD. I'm feeling a surge of wins coming down the pike!

Yo Mr. G,

The Rockies are my favorite team too. So I hope your not bashing me lol.... I'm from a small market area and no what it's like. So I definetly hope you weren't getting mad at me...

Completely agree. If Cargo continues his hot hitting, not only is he a legit candidate for the MVP but the Triple Crown as well. Cargo continues to sneak up on the AVG/HR/RBI leaders daily. Jimenez would also be a candidate, especially if he finishes 25-5. He is currently 17-2 with 11 starts remaining. If he goes 8-3, he finishes 25-5 and wins the Cy Young by a landslide and receives serious consideration for the MVP. Only comment I would disagree on is the Rox being a small market team. NO WAY. Denver metro has a population of 3M+ and growing everyday. Not only are they a draw in the rest of Colorado but regionally as well (NM, OK, KS, NE, SD, WY & UT). While they are not a big market team, they definitely aren't a small market team. I would say an upper mid-market team. Plus, the Rox are 6th in NL attendance and 10th in MLB attendance. Pretty darn impressive for a "small" market team, huh?! Give us some credit out here in the Rocky Mtns!

They never do it, but Jimenez should win the Cy Young and NL MVP if he finishes in the mid-20's in wins!

Deserving? Maybe so.

Will it happen? No way

Key is that the "Colorado" factor will kill him. That's why only one Rockie has ever won - and look at the numbers it took Larry Walker to do so: 49 homers, 33 steals, 130 rbi's & hit .366.

Car-Go is having a great year, and will get many MVP votes - but playing in Colorado, you have to be more than great - you have to be out of this world - and compared to the numbers it took Walker - Gonzalez is 45 points lower in average, and not on pace to come real close to Walkers other numbers either.

As a Rockies fan, I've gotten to enjoy watching Carlos Gonzales all year, and it would be great to see him get some national attention for the monster year he is having. Aside from the fact that it looks like a longshot the Rox will make the playoffs, there is one other thing that is going to hurt CarGo -- the Coors Field effect. Cargo's home and away splits are not as good as you would hope for from an MVP - very average numbers away, ridiculous numbers at home. I've watched him enough to know CarGo is a star in any park, but I do think MVP voters will discount some of what CarGo has done this year because he has not performed as well on the road.

Yeah he's been a great fantasy player too, with 5 weeks over 30 Fantasy points, If i'm correct I think he had over 50 last week with his triple and so fourth. Thanks to everyone who stopped by. It's really appreciated.
