Count Jeff Gordon among those drivers who would like to see a road course added to the ten races that comprise the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

"I’ve always said that in order to make the championship fully complete and find out the true best team and driver, the only thing that I think we’re missing in the Chase right now is a road course,” Gordon said Friday during his media session at Watkins Glen. “I feel like the Chase has about everything right now from short tracks to superspeedways to intermediates, so I think it’s pretty complete right now, but if you wanted to look at just one little thing that was missing, it would be a road course.”

Gordon also believes the recent level of increased excitement at road course events would make the decision to include a Chase road race a hit with fans.

“I guess as exciting as the road courses have been here lately with these double-file restarts, I think the fans would be for it as well,” Gordon said. “Where as in the past, you haven’t seen that kind of action so most people would say that road course isn’t as traditional as the ovals are in our sport so why have one in the Chase? I could see one in there.”

Although NASCAR won't completely dismiss the idea, the sanctioning body doesn't envision including a road course as part of the Chase schedule any time soon.

“As we sit here today, we still maintain the thought process that when we introduced the Chase that we were not going to shuffle tracks around to adapt to the Chase,” NASCAR president Mike Helton said. “The Chase was the last 10 races.

“Now, however that might work out in the future, if someone comes to us and asks to change stuff around, we would have to take a look at it, consider it. There’s nothing on the table today."

While I agree with Gordon on this issue of adding a road course I disagree with his reasoning.
If he was horrible on road courses he wouldn't be saying a thing.  Since he runs pretty well on them it plays to his advantage to have them included.
I see this as nothing more than a spoiled rotten little brat trying to get his way so he can increase his own chances for a title.

Now if this was coming from someone who has never won a road course, or even placed in the top 10 in one, I think it would add a little more credibility to their comments.

I think they should do more than a couple road course races a year. I'd like to see these guys race at places like Road America, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Sebring, etc. It'd be fun! (Plus, you could attract more of the international stars.)

ANy change that doesn't enhance Junior's chances of winning will not be considered or implemented. It's only a matter of time before NASCAR will expand The Chase to include a "fan favorite" driver that fans vote for after the last race of the regular season. Don't laugh. Junior is the reason that NASCAR adopted The Chase to begin with. He had no chance of ever winning under the traditional point system that was good enough for all the other greats, so NASCAR came up with a system that would overcome his shortcomings. It blew up in the faces when Junior couldn't even make it. Then NASCAR expanded it over and over until they felt the field was big enough that Junior could make it in. If he fails to make it yet again, don't doubt NASCAR will do more tinkering to see that he does.

What a line of CRAP! JR may be the fan favorite but he still has been up and down at best over the last few years. How does adding a road course improve his chances of winning the chase or even getting into the chase? Road course helps guys like Mark Martin, Robbie Gordon, Jeff Gorgon, Ambose, etc....

I like JR just as much as the next JR fan but he still hasn't proved to me that he can run the road courses anywhere as good as he can run the super speedways. You need to figure out whether your a JR basher or a true NASCAR fan. This move to add a road course is a MUST, not a way to improve a certain drivers chance of winning!

A road race has to be added! The chase is suppose to be the best verses the best that year and in you have road races during the year you should have them during the chase. Right now the chase is favoring the teams who perform the best on the mile and a halfs. I feel you get a better mix of the types and length of courses you will have a better chance of a competitive chase. Sure you have to have a little luck along with talent to win the chase but adding more rinkles to the type of courses raced gives more chances to the driver who perform better at the other types of tracks.

I don't see what the problem is about adding a road course in The Chase For The Cup Series because they have a few road courses during the season leading up to "The Chase". This will be discussed more once the season comes to an end and will be included in the plans for 2012........Believe Dat Baby!!!CoolMoney mouth

Tell me, exactly how was the new chase system supposed to benefit Jr.?  Or how about the wild card change they made, how did that benefit him?  Your blind hate is amazing.

If you are going to make a driver qualify for the chase by competing in a road course race, then you have to consider including a road course race in the chase, just common sense really. Any benefit to a particular driver by including a road race in the chase is the same benefit that driver or any driver has or doesn't have in qualifying for the chase. Those who have a conspiracy theory to the contrary need to get a grip, I'm just saying....

Road course Chase race okay with Jeff Gordon

Given that he is NASCAR's all time road course winner, why wouldn't he want road courses in the Chase?
I agree with you that it might benefit Jeff Gordon, but if you really think about it a road course should be added to the chase. If you are going to win it all in Sprint Cup Series you should be able to win or compete at all the race tracks that Nascar has during the year.
