Danica Patrick officially announced Thursday that she would leave the IndyCar Series at the end of the season, to drive full-time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2012.

Pistone: Up to Danica to now perform

Patrick will remain with JR Motorsports in the Nationwide Series. In 20 career Nationwide starts, she has an average finish of 23.8, with one top five and three top 10s.

Patrick will also try to qualify for eight to10 Sprint Cup races, in a car fielded by Stewart-Haas Racing. One of the races is expected to be the Daytona 500, though at her news conference she couldn't confirm her Cup schedule for 2012.

She has run seven full-time seasons in the IndyCar Series where she has amassed one win, 20 tops fives and 61 top 10s in 111 starts. Her best points finish was fifth in 2009.

What they're saying

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: “Danica has done a great job in a short amount of time for JR Motorsports. Her work ethic is probably the best of anyone in the sport.  People don’t understand how difficult it is to do what she did – racing two totally different cars at the same time.  I’m glad she gets the opportunity to devote all of her attention to this car, because I think she’s going to continue getting better.  Danica has earned her place on the track, and I look forward to having her and Go Daddy back in the No. 7 car next year.”

Tony Stewart: “We’re very excited to have Danica Patrick and Go Daddy join Stewart-Haas Racing in 2012 for a limited NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule with the intention of us running her full-time in Sprint Cup in 2013. We’re proud of the fact she wants to come and be a part of Stewart-Haas Racing and what we’ve built with Ryan Newman and myself and all of our partners. Having Danica and Go Daddy as a combination at SHR is something we’re really looking forward to.

“The thing you see in Danica right away is how determined she is to be good at what she does. She’s very dedicated to taking the time and effort to make the transition from Indy cars to stock cars. She has talent, she has the right mindset and she has the proper drive and determination. It doesn’t matter who it is you’re looking for, those are the key attributes that you look for in a driver, and Danica’s got them.

“I see great things for Danica. Danica doesn’t hold back. She really is a fearless competitor. She’s taken a systematic approach to her stock car career, which is smart. I think with the support she has from Go Daddy and Dale Jr. and all of us at Stewart-Haas Racing, Danica has a very promising NASCAR future.”

Brian France, NASCAR chairman and CEO: “We are pleased Danica Patrick has chosen to race full time in NASCAR in 2012," said . "She has demonstrated a strong desire to compete and NASCAR provides the best opportunity to race against the top drivers in the world with the largest and most loyal fan base in motorsports on a week-to-week basis. Danica has shown solid improvement in NASCAR and we believe her decision to run full time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, with additional races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will be exciting for our fans and a great challenge for her.”

Randy Bernard, IndyCar CEO: "Danica has always been a great ambassador for IndyCar, and there is no doubt  she has left a positive impression on our sport.  She has touched millions of fans and many that were new to motorsports. Danica attracted a fan base that every athlete and sports property in the world would love to have. We should give her a great farewell the rest of this season as she opens a new page in her career and wish her continued success with her new direction. "

Danica Patrick makes NASCAR full-time commitment

Who wins the Nationwide series championship is as relevant as who wins the AHL, International League, or PCL.  The real question is whether Ms. Marketing can actually race, and the answer thus far in the IRL and Nationwide Series is--noI
She races about as good or better than half of the Nationwide regulars. Stenhouse, Almirola, Bayne, Allgaier and Sadler will be the ones that she will be trying to beat, because in the races ive seen her in she is as good or better that the others guys, like Leffler, Wallace, etc.

Can she race with the big boys? Only time will tell. But it's not worth debating. Let's just wait till the end of this season and the beginning of next.

Danica Patrick makes NASCAR full-time commitment

I think that the stats are pretty clear.....Danica has had a chance.  In fact, she's had 20 chances and has posted an average finish of 23.8.  If you're looking for middle of the road performance, the Danica has what you're looking for!

Obviously all you look at is the stats and any sports fan knows that the "stats" don't tell the true story.

Danica has had 3 Top 10's in 7 starts this year. She still hasn't completed as many races in her career as these guys have raced in this season. You all are idiots if you think ANYONE that doesn't have ANY stock car experience is going to be immediately successful.

Eury Jr. and Danica have both said they were mostly worried about laps the first season. Now look what she has done with tracks she had come back too.

Daytona 1: 35th
Daytona 2: 14th (1 Lap led)
Daytona 3: 10th (13 Laps Led)

Phoenix 1: 32nd
Phoenix 2: 17th

Las Vegas 1: 36th
Las Vegas 2: 4th

Auto Club 1: 31st
Auto Club 2: 30th (WAS RUNNING 14th UNTIL SHE WAS WRECKED)

Chicagoland 1: 24th
Chicagoland 2: 10th

Im not saying shes going to be a NSCS champion, im not saying she's going to be a NNS Champion, or even win a race next year. All I'm saying is give her a REAL chance, a season or 2 before you make this idiotic comments.

Danica Patrick makes NASCAR full-time commitment

So NASCAR now has its own Tim Tebow?  Someone irrelevant and unaccmplished that the media will fawn over and report on endlessly? Great.

They apparently do a good job of reeling you in.....

This is simply a money decision.  Danica is pretty and she's in a sport dominated by men, this makes her marketing gold.  Her Nascar career will last as long as she's turning heads.

To Braves win1995:

You say she is undeserving with only 1 win in 109 races. Thats better then alot of male drivers.  Earnhardt Sr gave Michael Waltrip a ride, even tho Waltrip had gone 16 years and 462 race starts without a win. What did Waltrip do in his 1st race with Earnhardt as his owner?....... He won( 2001 Daytona 500). Waltrip posted wins in 3 straight seasons.  I say give her a chance before you judge her.

Danica Patrick makes NASCAR full-time commitment

To everyone who choses to make a negative comment about Danica or this story:

Whether you like her or not, and whether you think NASCAR is better or worse for this move, more attention has been and will be payed to NASCAR because of it.  Including yours.  Not only did you click on the story, you wrote a comment.  You would not have read this story if it were about some "no-name" driver.

With Danica, it never has been and never will be about whether she is successful.  It's all about viewership and money.  Period.

Danica Patrick makes NASCAR full-time commitment

I am saddened by this. She has very minimal success in auto racing in general. Congratulations to the people that talked her into this or to Manica for talking them into this. That's some serious marketing right there. Unproven & getting a major ride through the successes of others. Win on US soil first...then step into the American racing "iconic" series. I am a PASSIVE Junior fan but he made a mistake here by hiring Manica to drive. Same with Stewart. This is going to end up being a big joke come the end 2012 series, both of them. NASCAR, you just took a big step back. Not good when you're losing your fan base. SH
