Ryan Newman was on top the leader board in Friday's opening practice at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver, who won last July's Sprint Cup Series race at the track, was the fastest of the 45 drivers who practiced.

Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Juan Pablo Montoya rounded out the first five.

Rain is in the area and if Friday's qualifying session does get washed out, Newman would lead the field to green in Sunday's Sylvania 300 by virtue of his practice speed.

Newman leads first Loudon practice

Hmmm, I wonder if the writer who had Newman finishing 12th in the Chase might want to rethink his rankings a bit. He may not win the whole thing, but a 9th and then starting on the pole at a track he won at already this year sure doesn't sound like last place material to me.
