It's not often you hear a crew chief instruct a driver to damage a race car but that's exactly what Chad Knaus did to Jimmie Johnson last Sunday at Talladega.

According to a report by SB Nation, Knaus told Johnson prior to Sunday's Good Sam Club 500 to damage the Lowe's Chevrolet in a post race victory celebration had the team won.

The article goes on to describe the conversation (here's an audio clip) between the crew chief and driver:

"If we win this race, you have to crack the back of the car," Knaus could be heard telling Johnson on the recording. "Got it?"

"Really?" Johnson replied, sounding surprised.

"Yes," Knaus said. "Got it? You don't have to have to hit it hard, you don't have to destroy it. But you've gotta do a donut and you've gotta hit the back end, or somebody's gotta hit you in the ass-end or something. OK?"

After Johnson responds with apparent silence (he can't be heard saying anything else), Knaus added, "You'll be alright. Can't take any chances."

Johnson's car did pass inspection three times over the weekend including opening day, pre qualifying and pre race.

Report: Knaus told Johnson to damage car

Amazing NASCAR didn't check the car after that statement.  They monitor all the radio frequencies during the weekend and just happened to miss that one?  Now they are trying to cover their butts and say "If we had known about it"  And Pete tries to cover their butt by saying they passed 3 inspections.  It's what Chad did after they got through inspection that he was worried about.  You don't tell a driver to wreck a car if it's legal and considering he won in April at Dega being pushed, anything conclusion other than the car was no longer legal is total BS.  But NASCAR, bless their HMS Loving Hearts, made sure they ignored the problem and didn't think anyone would raise the question.

bgp:  "But, but, but...  trevor bayne bailed on gordon at the end!!!!  team orders, blah, blah, blah. "  What does any of this have to do with Knaus?  I guess CBS's rating system works...Score: 1    :)

Sounds like Chad's not quite as intelligent as most assumed.  Why would anyone with 1/2 a brain broadcast a statement like that?  He could have very easily pulled JJ aside prior to driver introductions and told him this with nobody being any the wiser.  Gonna be funny watching karma catch up with the 48 team...

HMMM If this is a reliable source, the JJ era may end up like USC or Ohio State. Smells like bull to me, why would Knaus (who let's be honest has skirted the rules before) say something so blatant over the radio?

Still, before that has to happen. JJ needs to win and that may be harder than beating the NASCAR rules
