The iconic number "3" made famous by Dale Earnhardt will run in the Nationwide Series next season courtesy of Richard Childress and grandson Austin Dillon.

Childress announced at a press conference Friday morning at Texas Motor Speedway that Dillon would move up from the Camping World Truck Series to the Nationwide Series in 2012 and carry the same number of seven-time Sprint Cup champion Earnhardt.

AdvoCare will sponsor Dillon for twenty events on the schedule next season as RCR returns to the division on a full-time basis.

“We are excited to have AdvoCare on board as Austin makes the full time step into the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2012 driving the No. 3 Chevrolet,” said Childress. We look forward to working closely with them and the other partners on the No. 3 team to build a competitive and successful program.”

RCR has a fairly successful history competing in NASCAR's number two division.

The team has earned 56 victories and five series championships since its first season in 2000. Kevin Harvick won overall championships (driver and owner) in 2001 and 2006, Harvick and Johnny Sauter won the owner championship in 2003, Jeff Burton and Scott Wimmer won the owner championship in 2007 and Clint Bowyer won the driver championship in 2008.

Dillon leads the Camping World Truck Series by eleven points heading into Friday night's WinStar World Casino 350 at Texas.

Although he has driven the number three in truck competition, Childress said the decision to move it up to the Nationwide Series was taken lightly.

"The three has so much winning tradition, and Dale made that number famous," Childress said. "I know he'd be proud to see (Dillon) run it."

But Childress said truth be told the idea wasn't his own but rather that of Dillon's.

"Austin said, 'Pop-Pop, I want to use your number,'" Childress explained. "I said, 'Austin, that was my number, but Dale made the number famous.' He said, 'Well, it's still your number. I want to run your number.'

"How you going to tell your grandkid no on something?"

Childress said Friday that he has no intention of taking the "3" back into the Sprint Cup Series.

Earnhardt's '3' to Nationwide Series with Dillon

FIrst let's set the record straight - It is not EARNHARDTS number 3 . Dale ran the number but he also ran the number 2 and the number 15 for a long time in the cup series.

I wish people would quit saying it was  Dale's number, the number belongs to NASCAR and it is leased by the owners.

It will be great to see the number 3 back on the track, Now maybe the press will let Dale Earnhardt rest in peace.

Earnhardt's '3' to Nationwide Series with Dillon

I'm an Earnhardt fan, and I don't have a problem with the 3 being on a car. I think the issue is they are using the 3 in the same style as Earnhardts, if you redesigned the look I doubt anybody would have a problem with it. Of course, nobody seems to have a problem with that stylized 3 on the 33 and 31 cars.

Earnhardt's '3' to Nationwide Series with Dillon

My point was Richard Petty put the number 43 back in running. I never said nascar retired it. The post was vague so I will give you pass for not understanding what I said. Sympethic bullcrap really. I didnt want to keep up the silly name calling but you are obviously an a hole and a total douche. Dale died on the track I think it is warrented. Personally I dont think they should retire numbers if you actually care to hear my point of view, but I doubt it so I will leave with this RIP to all the drivers who died for our entertainment.

The 43 has 198 wins between 5 drivers with the last being with John Andretti in 1999.  Petty didn't win all his races in the 43, he won 6 times in the 41 and twice in the 42 also.  The 11 car is only 1 win behind with 197 wins.  Since the 43 can't seem to get anyone that can win to drive for them, Hamlin should help the 11 pass the 43 in all time wins next season.  The 3 car is 3rd with 97 wins.  The 21 has 91 wins and the 24 rounds out the top 5 with 85 wins (all from Jeff Gordon).

But if NASCAR does retire any numbers, the 43 should be the first.  It will be interesting what will happen when Richard Petty either dies or decides that he no longer wants to be an owner.

Earnhardt's '3' to Nationwide Series with Dillon

You check the facts MORON !! There isn't a single number ever retired by NASCAR!!! Back in 1993 (The first year Richard Petty was retired) He switched the car number to #44 while also having the rights to the #43. Nascar put the pressure on them about buying the rights to the number #43, but not using it so they went back to the #43 in 1994. If there wasn't so much sympathetic bullcrap toward Earnhardt I'm sure that Nascar would have put the screws to Childress as well for not using the #3 even though he pays for the rights to have it. I'm not some "new "20 something" NASCAR fan here. I've followed the sport intensely since the mid 1970's and probably have forgotten more about NASCAR than you have ever known......

the 43 is retired genuis. Richard Petty has rights to it and used it in competition on his own accord. Next time check the facts first.

Earnhardt's '3' to Nationwide Series with Dillon

To anyone who was a fan of NASCAR before Dale Earnhardt Sr. became a full time driver in 1979 knows that the #3 was Richard Childress' car number for many years. Childress has had the rights to that car number since the mid 1970's. It truly is his number to do with what he pleases. I'm sure he's very proud to have his grandson using the same car number that he used when he was a Winston Cup driver before retiring. As for retiring the #3 forever, well you better damn well make sure the #43 is retired first before the #3 gets retired.....200 wins, 7 Championships, 7 Daytona 500 victories.....ENOUGH SAID !!
