DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Fans of the "Dukes of Hazzard" television show remember the famous (or infamous) General Lee.

However the iconic car won't be part of a planned pre-race ceremony at Phoenix International Raceway after NASCAR stepped in and tabled plans to include the General Lee due to the prominent placement of the Confederate flag on its roof.

Pro golfer Bubba Watson was to have driven the car in the ceremony to be held prior to the March 4 Sprint Cup race at PIR but NASCAR has decided to nix the idea.

"NASCAR, International Speedway Corp. and Phoenix International Raceway officials discussed this and decided it was not in the best interest of our sport," NASCAR spokesman David Higdon said Friday.

"The image of the Confederate flag is not something that should play an official role in our sport as we continue to reach out to new fans and make NASCAR more inclusive."

Watson, who has become friends with driver Denny Hamlin, had tweeted his intention to take part in the ceremony early Friday morning. However he rescinded the plan in a later tweet:

"Sorry to say @nascar won't let me drive The General Lee at the @PhoenixRaceway !!! #dreamcrushed"

NASCAR nixes 'General Lee' from prerace ceremony

To claim that the rebel flag does not stand for an advocacy of slavery, racism, and hatred of the United States is simply retarded.  If one holds that twisted view, one is probably didn't make it beyond high school.

NASCAR is a watered down, boring, shadow of what it once was.  The only drivers left who have any personality are the older ones. Gone are the days of colorful, talented and reletnless drivers like Earnhardt, Wallace, the old Mark Martin and the Labonte's.  Now you have cookie cutter, pre programmed, groomed politically correct tit sucking babies and NASCAR sucks

I think you can say the same about MOST  sports,  you could once pick out a pitcher by his motion, now they are all the same, golf was once filled with a bunch of characters with home learned swings, now they are all the same.   The only sport with true individuality is the NBA.  Political correctness has robbed this nation of any type of ingenuity.  Look at the movie theaters, NO new films, just remakes of lousy films.

DaVishous1,

Your an idiot.  Your really going to compare the rebel flag and it's meaning and impression it leaves on people to the Swastika and the Nazi's.  That's like comparing a nuke to a hand grenade.  NASCAR is a watered down, boring, shadow of what it once was.  The only drivers left who have any personality are the older ones. Gone are the days of colorful, talented and reletnless drivers like Earnhardt, Wallace, the old Mark Martin and the Labonte's.  Now you have cookie cutter, pre programmed, groomed politically correct tit sucking babies and NASCAR sucks.  The cars suck, the drivers suck and the people running it suck.  I hope the whole rotten structure crumbles.  Sooner rather than later.

Just another moronic PC stance by folks who should no better.  If NASCAR was run by eastern elite snobs from NY or Boston, I could understand where they were coming from because their credo and motto is don't upset or offend anyone that might vote for Obama.

I think you just made your own point assclown. These cars have nothing to do with moonshine running in the mid-1900's. Were you bitching, starting a boycott, throwing a temper tantrum, etc... when Jaguar was racing in NASCAR back in the 50's, and won? Oh that's right, you weren't even a dim sparkle in your daddy's eye. Or let me guess, you think Jaguar was American. Nothing says illegally runningn alochol like a Jag, don't it buddy!

Another NASCAR history lesson.....back when NASCAR started...the cars and their makes were all purebreds....ie; chevy, was a factory, off the line all chevy product..with a few modifications for race...same with Dodge/Chrystler,Ford and all other GM brands that were racing.....that much is not true anymore....the cars have highly modified engines and trannies, rearends and suspensions....none of these are make original... cars are not actually the make they show on the body shell.....as a matter of fact the shell is also fabricated outside of a major automobile factory....these are mostly made within their own shops......so....in realization...NASCAR has not been manufaturer savy for years....another derivitive from their originality....

WTF....what do you mean...what does TOYOTA have to do with it.....let me refresh your mindless brain.....NASCAR was founded on moonshine running...ie: AMERICAN....up untill NASCAR started losing fans (MONEY more so) it was solely comprised of AMERICAN built automobiles....ie: Chevy,Pontiac,Buick,Ford and Dodge/Chrysler.....which are all AMERICAN....which is another part of NASCAR history...for your information....TOYOTA is not AMERICAN....but FRIGGIN JAPANEESE.....HOW MANY TOYOTAS were actually used for MOONSHIE RUNNING....NONE....so...why should they be allowed to run in NASCAR.....any more questions ?  THAT is what TOYOTA has to do with it.

I’m offended.  I’m offended that NASCAR thinks that I’m too dumb to get the wrong idea about the General Lee being in the pre-race ceremony.   You know what, I don’t think that there are enough African-Americans racing either.  We should eliminate some qualified drivers and let some African-Americans in.  You know what, we should also give them an extra 10% credit on their score.  We do that with applicants that are bidding for spots on the police force or fire departments.  How is the General Lee in the pre-race ceremony so politically incorrect but not giving 10% to a white male is?  If all the drivers were to do a lap holding the flag out the window, I would see your point.

There's only one word to describe this decision but one has to choose among several: gutless and illiterate are two that come to my mind.... with rediculous being the last.

NASCAR nixes 'General Lee' from prerace ceremony

I quit watching CRAPCAR Years ago . it used to be we couldnt wait for the next race . between the COT and the Japeneese in a American sport this long time race fan give up on them .  I Used to race short track myself and still help out a friend of mine on weekends . he has a UMP Dirt Modified . i just stick with the grass roots racing . that will never ever change . i will always have a burning passion for racing . just not CRAPCAR .

as they tried to bring in new fans they drove off the ones who got them to where they are now . most new ones have no idea the history of the sport . keep catering to the yuppies . i will keep chosing not to attend or watch .

it was a TV Show . no big deal IMHO . PC SUCKS!!!

Who didnt like Dasiy Duke in those short shorts & heels Tongue out . the only reason i watched that show
