DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Danica Patrick's first appearance in the Gatorade Duel at Daytona ended violently with a hard crash into the backstretch inside wall.

Patrick climbed from her car uninjured in the vicious crash and gave her view of what took place after she made on track contact with Aric Almirola.

“It happened really quickly," Patrick explained.  "I guess you can always imagine when you get down to the end of the race everyone is on each other’s doors really close.  It’s just kind of what happens at the end of the race.  Unfortunately, I was part of it.  I felt like I was having at least a solid race.  I worked my way up there at the beginning a little bit; hung around in the front group for a while.  I felt like it kind of slowed down I was dragging the brake a little bit just to keep with the pack and not run up to them too quickly.  I don’t know if that had any affect.  We were just looking to finish to be honest; unfortunately that was not the case.”

Patrick ran inside the top ten for some of Thursday's first 60-lap qualifying race but wasn't really a challenger for the lead or win. Still she feels the day was part of her learning process and she'll try to take something away from the experience including the crash.

“I’m betting that everybody that was watching on TV probably had the best look," Patrick said. "From my perspective it was obviously the last lap and the bottom lane started moving well so that is where I was.  We were just getting our run down the back and all of a sudden I got hit.  I’m betting that somebody also got hit outside of me, is what I’m betting.

"I’m going to have to look.  It was just a chain reaction every person that gets hit, next and next and next.  It gets bigger and bigger.  It felt like a pretty big hit so I don’t know what it looked like.  I’m really just bummed out that we didn’t finish the last two corners.  Instead we have a Go Daddy car in the wall and lots of damage and I’m sure a back-up.  But, what I said was maybe the back-up car will be faster.”

Yer kinda right.  McMurray dives down to make his move and Almirola overreacts on his avoid move.  I don't know that he and McMurray made contact (didn't look like it on the video) but regardless, you're right.  McMurray made a sudden inside move and it started the accident.

Watch the video again. The 1 car slid down into the 43 and the 43 into the 10. Hence, the 1 car was the car that started the chain reaction.

VIDEO: Danica Patrick crashes on last lap of Duel

With all the Danica haters out there I decided to see if she actually earned a spot in the Daytona 500. Guess what?  She qualified 29th!  Last I checked, that means that even without the 35 rule and everything that goes with it, if the Duals had been what they should be, which is real qualifying for the 500, then she qualified.  So, how is she not worthy to be there?  Not sure what her placing would have been if she hadn't been hit, but undoubtedly it would have been higher.  And, no, it was clearly not her fault.

The same bashers were critical of her on the open wheel circuit too.  But there can be no denying that she did accomplish what a lot of others who race there have never accomplished.  Not only did she win, but except for her last year (where she finished 11th) she was always rated in the top ten.  Still not worthy?  I guess you'd have to conclude that the only reason they have any spots in racing above where she finishes is so that a bunch of wussy assed guys can feel fake machismo.  After all, they are clearly not worthy to be there.  That means one year there were only 3 guys who were worthy.  On Thursday, there were only 28 guys who were worthy to be out there.  Will see what happens on race day.

Go Danica!

Yep, the video says it all.  Almirola clearly cuts into her while she had the line and was advancing.  100% his fault.

I wouldn't say I'm a Danica fan but I think her participation is good for the sport and I'd like to see her do well.  I'd have liked to have seen how far up she could have moved cause she passed Brad K like he was standing still and was moving up with some fair momentum when Aric flat out took her out.

Damned shame.

I wonder who she blamed this wreck on?
That's an easy question...Aric Almirola.  If you care to actually watch the video, you can clearly see he tries to take the low line when she's already there.  Actully blame Almirola's spotter who should have been telling him the line wasn't clear.  Danica was doing exactly what she should have been doing in this case.  She had the position and was moving forward with the inside line....you can Hate Danica or even Jr for all that matters, but this clearly wasn't her fault.

I am not a Nascar fan, but I would think that she is good for the sport. Anytime you can get a draw of fans or get people to tune in and watch on TV is a good thing. The media does make her out to be incredible. She raced open wheels a long time where zero contact is permitted. Any contact in that sport and its a wreck. Nascar is a 180 degree difference. I would think it would take some time to learn how to drive in a group that bumps.

Everyone who thinksDanica is getting unearned publicity might want to look at Juniors record.  All talk and no action.

If memory serves me right she has never wrecked herself! She is always hit by someone else. If you want to talk about someone that shouldn't be there then talk about Robby Gordon. What a waste of a spot. He never finishes on the lead lap and always wrecks someone Else! Most of you sure bring out the redneck in your comments. To bad that so many are ignorant and give the sport a black eye with your comments. go Daytona!
