(Johnson goes to this weekend's race in Phoenix with a -23 point total in the Sprint Cup standings)

NASCAR has suspended Jimmie Johnson's crew chief Chad Knaus six races as part of penalties levied to the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team as a result of rules infractions found at Daytona 500 pre-inspection.

Additionally, Johnson was docked 25 driver points and the team 25 owner points while Knaus was fined $100,000.

Because of his 42nd-place finish in Daytona, Johnson now goes to Phoenix this weekend with negative 23 points.

NASCAR confiscated illegal C-Posts found on the Lowe's Chevrolet during the Feb. 17 inspection.

Johnson and car chief Ron Malec were placed on probation until May 9.

Hendrick Motorsports announced it would appeal the penalty imemdiately.

"Our organization respects NASCAR and the way the sanctioning body governs our sport,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “In this case, though, the system broke down, and we will voice our concerns through the appeal process.”

NASCAR has agreed to defer the suspensions until after the appeal process.

NASCAR penalizes Jimmie Johnson's team

I'm a Jeff Gordon fan and hate to see him docked owner's points, but this is not the first time that 48 team has been caught "bending" the rules. I knoe Chad has been suspended before, but I think this is actually like the 3rd or 4th time they've been in trouble. I think the penalty was fair and right. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time...

NASCAR apparently can't do math!!!
They used to dock teams 25 points back when they could get up to 190 points for a race. Now you can only get 43 or so and they still take away 25!!! Johnson will NEVER recover if they don't pull their heads out of their @sses!

NASCAR should take away 5-7 points, not 25!

The 48 team has been in trouble before, so this is a repeat offender, keep that in mind. Knaus himself has been suspended twice, and Nascar has always made repeat offenders pay. In the old points system, I remember Nascar docking 150 pts. on more than one occasion to repeat offenders. So, I say they got what was coming to them. That illegal C-post would have given them alot more aerodynamics, and at Daytona, that equates to a faster car.

The C-Post is part of the body inbetween the rear window and the side rear glass.  You are allowed to modify the part slightly , but Johnsons was far beyond tolerances. It could have giving him an aerodynamic advantage.

Nascar can add. About time they punished them oh again. With the chase format if you think about not that big a hit easy to recover. If you ask me should park team for a week.

it would be the same a batter stepping into the batter's box with a corked bat... he may never have taken a swing before he was caught but it was his intent to use that illegal bat/car

Here is some math for you, 49 cars show up at Daytona and 1 fails inspection! That adds up to 48 legal cars and 1 illegal.

Absolute Joke! He did not use the car in a race, he did not have an advantage, it was a failed inspection, that was corrected. NASCAR rules seeem to be guided by the wind, or out of left field. Bottom line the part was deemed illeagal in inspection, the crew fixed the part per NASCAR's request, and the car that was raced never had any advantage period. 6 Races and a bunch of points for a failed pre race inspection is not in line with any policy. What is NASCAR going to do if they find a car failing inspection post race? Give an 18 race suspension, take away all their points then take them out back and shoot the driver and crew chief? It was a failed pre race inspection not a raid on NASCAR offices where the 48 crew robbed the company safe.
