Ronnie Lott v Deion Sanders - Who's Best?

Posted on: February 6, 2010 6:21 am

I wrote a blog on the Top 5 Defensive NFL Players of all time recently, listing Prime 5th, narrowly edging Lott.  A community member disagreed, which made me wonder what everyone else thinks.  So, let's here it....who's the better all time defensive player, Ronnie Lott or Deion Sanders??

My vote is for Prime Time!  True he was absent vs the run, but his presence on the field LITERALLY forced some teams to play on only the other half -- they wouldn't even dare try him!  Lott was an absolute beast, hitting harder than anyone I've ever seen....and it's hard to think someone may have been better -- but to me, Prime is it!

I highly respect your opinion.

What did you think of the rest of the list?

Ronnie Lott v Deion Sanders - Who's Best?

I agree with the first respondent on your original post. I think Lott had more impact on the defense as a whole than Deion. Both players needed to be game planned for. If I had to pick one over the other to build my defense around, it would be Lott over Deion. Lott's versatility gives him the edge over Deion.

Ronnie Lott v Deion Sanders - Who's Best?

Thanks for your input -- and a good argument you make.  However, my opinion would be that the reason no CBs today play in Deion's mold is that none of them are as physically gifted as him.  Make no mistake, I think Lott was a BEAST.  And the difference between the two is razor-thin.  I guess how I can decide is that PLAYERS feared Lott.....COACHES feared Prime.  But quite honestly, how could you go wrong with either??

Ronnie Lott v Deion Sanders - Who's Best?

I didn't catch your original blog, but the way you have this question worded, my vote would go to Lott. Lott lined up at CB, SS and FS and played at a high level at all of those positions. Deion was strictly kept at CB, and for good reason. He was one of the best if not the best CB. If you ask who was the better true CB, that would have to be Deion. If you ask who is the better defensive player, it would have to be Lott. Lott also changed the way safeties played the game. Deion had raw, gifted natural talent at CB, but didn't necessarily redefine the position. There are many safeties today that play in the mold of Lott, but there are really no CB's that play in the mold of Deion. For this comparison, I would rate these guys based on their contributions on defense as a whole and not just their individual performances.
