MATT JONES

2:30 AM

This was the scene as we left Cedar Falls, Iowa at 9 pm Central for what was to be a 7 hour drive through the night to Indianapolis for an 11 am Eastern tip for Siena-Butler.  We took off down the road and assumed we were in for a long night of driving and being careful on the road.  What we ended up with were the worst road conditions I have ever seen and a stretch of road from Waterloo to Cedar Rapids Iowa in which we were told (after we had navigated the 45 miles), "police are advising motorists to not even consider going on that road tonight."  We wish we had know that prior to the scariest 75 minutes of driving of my life.  After pulling off at the end of a 45 mile ride from hell, we decided we had been defeated and the dream of making Siena-Butler at a time before Drew would normally even be awake, was shattered.

We then stopped in Cedar Rapids at a Days Inn, and an old lady at the front desk asked what we were doing.  I said, "well its snowing hard and we dont want to be on these roads anymore."  As Drew and Tomlin began making jokes about driving from Cedar Falls to Cedar Rapids on roads that are slicker than Jamie Dixon's hair, the lady began to get angry.  She then replied with total disdain, "oh do you think you are better than Iowa?"  Hopefully Jeff Foxworthy will take that premise for a new gameshow on Fox.

So we have decided to do a detour...now instead of Siena-Butler, we are going to try and make the 2 pm Eastern tip of Louisville-Depaul.  The CBS College Basketball Road Trip rolls on with a car full of travelers who are better than Iowa.

Road Trip Takes Its First Detour

Iowa winters are tough.  I'm from Lexington, graduated from UK in '96 and then moved to nice warm Raliegh, NC in '97.  My job moved me to wonderful Davenport (actually Bettendorf), Iowa in 2005 (actually a very nice area for raising a family).  I went from the one winter extreme in Raliegh to the other in Iowa where we typically have snow on the ground from December through April.  The one thing I will say is they do a very good job clearing the roads, so the initial heavy snow may slow you down, but it won't be long before everything is up and running again like normal.

I still laugh at the freak mid-day snow event in Raleigh in the early 2000's where the area received about 1" of snow but they decided to let all the schools out early and everybody left work instantly.  The roads were gridlocked and it actually took some people 12 hours to get home.  Then news helicopter cameras showed the rows packed with cars but nobody was moving.  I feel much safer driving in the worst winter snow storm in Iowa than I do driving in any winter conditions in Raleigh (so many bad drivers, slow driving southerners mixed with aggressive yankees)

4WD or AWD is nice, but the real trick I have learned since living here in Iowa is swapping out for dedicated winter tires once the temps drop below 40.  I drive a 4 door sedan with AWD and snowtires and I can't be stopped no matter how much snow we get.  A Kia Rondo is a very poor choice for your winter travels through the midwest.

Dubuque is a strange place, unlike anything else I have seen.  It doesn't take very long once arriving into the city to nitice that there is just something different about it.  Guys i work with who are from the Quad Cities and lived in Iowa there whole lives say the same thing about Dubuque.  Good people there, just a different way of life in a lot of ways.

Loyal KSR reader since the early days.
