MATT JONES

Without question, this is the best first afternoon of the NCAA Tournament in its history.  However the South Region (otherwise known as the "We Love you Coach K and its been awhile, so please thank us latter) Region is an utter joke and has been exposed as such over the course of three games.  Notre Dame was defeated, Villanova should have been defeated and today, Baylor survived a scare from Sam Houston State 68-59.

If you watched the game, then you were probably mesmerized by Gilberto Clavell's 1980-edition Rec Specs and you missed the impressive performance by Baylor big man Ekpe Udoh, who is firmly cementing his status as a potential future NBA star.  The Michigan transfer had 20 points, 13 rebounds and was able to play a modicum of defense on Clavell in the second half, thus forcing Sam Houston State to jack up outside shots.  When Sam Houston State went cold in the last four minutes, Baylor took a late 8-0 run, and the upset was averted.

It was a great performance by Sam Houston, but it also showcases what could be a continuing theme throughout this bracket.  When it comes to Xs and Os, Scott Drew can look like a lost puppy in big games.  Sam Houston came out in a "Triangle and two" defense, a rarely used gimmick, that is rarely used because it is so easy to break.  The defense puts two individuals on the other teams' best players, and then sends the other three players to guard the rest of the court.  One step of penetration or changing of alignment (sticking your guards on the baseline) and the defense can be rendered ineffective.  However Drew didnt even make the simplest changes, suggesting that he (a) likely did not know how to beat the defense and (b) the Sam Houston coach suspected as much and designed it with that in mind.

Drew is a great recruiter, but when it comes to coaching big games, one wonders if he is up to the task.  He will get his chance to show again in two days, as ODU coach Blaine Taylor has a great basketball mind and players that can match up to Baylor's athleticism.

The Bears move on and the rec specs are retired.  Life sometimes is not fair.

Baylor Staves Off Invasion by Sam Houston (State)

Lets just start off by saying you should be fired on the spot. I'm a journalism major at Texas and your Koresh comment is just plain messed up. I've lived in Waco all my life and have heard about all of that. You crossed a line BIG TIME. I thought CBS was a good station but if they don't fire you for this comment then I was wrong. You were Way out of line. Koresh had nothing to do with Baylor so don't try and tie him to them.

You say that Drew is a "lost puppy" in big games. Well lets go back to the NCAA tournament last year. They beat Texas and Kansas, both are huge games. This year they almost beat Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas where Kansas is on a rediculous winning streak. He held with a team that Baylor probably should'nt have been able to stick with. They beat Texas in Austin, in Waco, and in Kansas City. I don't care if Texas struggled this year. Texas is still a talented good team. Then they beat A&M in Waco while A&M was probably the favorite. Before all of that he took a Baylor team that was in a tough spot and rebuilt the team from practically nothing and brought them to what they are today. They are a good team and they weren't suppose to be this year and the comment of a not even mediocre "critic" won't change what they have done. Congrats to the Bears and their fans for the sucess this year.

Finally you say that this bracket is basically a joke is just plain retarded. Lets look at the other 3 seeds. #3 Georgetown got creamed 97-83 to Ohio and #3 New Mexico almost lost to Montana. The only 3 seed to roll wat Pitt. So it's not just the South, every bracket is having upsets. ESPN said that this was the year that there would be a ton of upsets, and that's exactly what we have seen. So until you actually do your research and think things through how bout you not write anything else.

Oh and CBS better fire you. You own a HUGE apology to Waco and Baylor.

What's the matter Matt? Did you lose money betting the 11 point spread?
Taking it out now on Scott Drew whose team won by 9? You are the lost mangy puppy.
Your mother should have littered better.

Mr. Jones, when do you plan on graduating from middle school? Let me strongly suggest that unless and until you can document how much (or little) talent Koresh brought to the Waco area (his compound was 10 mile outside of town), you refrain from making any comparison of him and Drew. And unless one is a Baylor fan, it would have been hilarious to see you at the helm of the Bears yesterday. They would have been blown out!

I'm going to suggest that unless and until Mr. Jones knows just how much (or little) talent David Koresh brought to the Waco, Texas area (his compound was 10 miles outside that city), he refrain from making any comparison of Koresh and Drew. I've read adolescent ramblings on blogs, but this one is of middle school quality at best. And, Mr. Jones, it would have been hilarious to see you coaching the Baylor Bears against Sam Houston State. The Bears would have been blown out!

Very well said......hopefully if Drew faces another surprise like he did yesterday, he will figure out how to overcome it more successfully. But in the end, the guys got it done...the GUYS did....maybe not the coach but those guys are fighters and have a lot of heart. Drew is a great coach as you pointed out, and has won some huge games, in my opinion, especially last year. And of course even though UT stinks, winning 4 straight says a lot! Losing by just 5 AT KU and by only 2 to K-State says a lot, as well. Drew will go far with BU should he stay.

Really wish enough people would slam this guy that we could get him fired! He crossed a journalistic line with this piece.

I told the guy his Koresh comment should get him fired or sued. Comparing our guys to a lunatic incestuous rapist cult leader should be getting his rear thrown out of the commentator's seat! I am so sick of these idiotic commentators who think only Duke, UK< Kansas and NC should ever be in the Final 4.

Matt,

Your comment about David Koresh was so far from appropriate you should be fired on the spot or sued by the university for making such a comparison. You basically compared OUR guys to an incestuous, murdering, lunatic rapist cult leader...you do realize that, don't you? Or is your head stuck so far up your behind that you don't get that? As for the weak Regional BU is in and the near upset of 'Nova, is this your first NCAA tourney to watch? If not, then you should know that first rounds are often crazy and there are usually several memorable upsets! It is what I like to call the Cinderella Syndrome. On any given day, especially in basketball, any team can win...any David can slay their Goliath...that is the fun in March Madness. Just because idiots like you think the Final 4 should only EVER be comprised of the Dukes, Kentuckys, Kansases and NC's every single year does not mean that is what should or will happen. Wake up, dude and stop bashing the Bears. You sports commentators need to stop the hate and either shut up or get on board!

The David Koresh statement was out of line. You owe the Waco community and Baylor University an apology for that statement.

As for Scott Drew, He truly is one of the best things that has happened to Baylor in a long time. After the Dave Bliss incident and the NCAA basically giving Baylor the death penalty, he has done so much for this program. He has recruited amazingly well, gotten Baylor to a point where it can compete night in and night out, and even win.

Baylor is the only team in the NCAA division one basketball that has not lost a game by more than 7 points this season. Scott Drew, and Baylor basketball, deserve some credit.

We support you, Coach Drew, and Sic'em Bears
