DREW FRANKLIN

We have our first buzzer beater of the 2010 NCAA tournament.

Murray State's Danero Thomas drilled a 15-footer as the buzzer sounded to beat Vanderbilt 66-65.

For the second time in a row, a four seeded Vanderbilt team was sent home early from the big dance.  #13 Siena knocked off Vanderbilt in 2008 and today the Racers of Murray State pulled off the first-round upset.  At least Obama is getting something right .

Here are a few thoughts from the game:

A.J. Ogilvy, leave the highlights to "One Shining Moment"   A.J. Ogilvy's blonde highlights might work back in Australia, but this is America. And in America, basketball players put highlights on Sportscenter - not on their head.  And what was up with that mustache?

SEC Coach of the Year?   Vanderbilt's Kevin Stallings won the SEC Coach of the Year over Kentucky's John Calipari this season in a WTF decision.  I demand to see his ACT scores.  COYs don't lose in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The kid crying in Murray's band will be the image of the tournament.   No matter what happens between now and the trophy presentation, that kid will be the face of the 2010 NCAA tournament.  I hope you saw him.

Was it really an upset?   On paper, a 13 seed over a 4 seed is an upset.  However, no one should be surprised that Murray State won.  This team is legit.

Danero was money.   "Dinero" is Spanish for "money."  "Danero" is basketball for "which Racer girl should I sleep with?"  Congrats on the big shot, Mr. Thomas.  It's one you'll never forget.

Stop being a douche. We're a great team. And you want to know why the "fat kid" and a lot of the other band members were crying? It's because we are so passionate for our team. We haven't won an NCAA tourney game in 24 years. We were crying because it was an amazing moment for our guys. And Danero is great. Don't say that about him.

I agree...

You Go Girl!    The Racer Band and the Basketball team are full of the most amazing people you will find on the planet.  Decker is an awesome guy, and I was soo miffed to see "fat kid" in the article and then watch the video to see that it was him.  Drew needs to be a little more...shall we say "caring" about who and what he labels.

I agree with many of your points in this entry and appreciate the fact that the Murray State Racers are a legitimate team who deserve to be in the big dance.  No one who has followed this team through the regular season was surprised by the win over Vanderbilt.  I have a big problem with your comments about the student in the pep band.  I hope that he becomes the face of the 2010 tourney because he exhibited the the true emotion felt when you put your heart and soul into supporting a team through a long season that results in OVC regular season and tournament championships and a trip to the NCAA tournament.  He is a leader in the MSU Racer Pep Band and Marching Band and is the team's loudest cheerleader.  He is also an excellent student.  Remember him for those things, not for being the "fat kid crying in Murray's band."

And to describe Danero as meaning "which Racer girl should I sleep with" is a gross misconception of college basketball, at least at Murray State.  That was totally uncalled for.  Have you ever met Danero?  Have you spent time getting to know the young men on this team?  You should apologize to Danero, the Racer team, and the Racer nation for these comments!

Stick to the facts of the game!  Keep opinions to yourself!  Especially when they are hurtful to young people who work as hard as these do!

The fat kid? How very professional...

By the way, there's a fan page for him.

Well Drew I can tell you don't know much about human feelings. Adam, the "fat kid", is a passionate Racer fan to say the least. No one is louder or more into the games than he is. To call him that was really uncalled for. And "which Racer girl will I sleep with"? Maybe where you went to school , that's the way he might think. Make your sports points, but keep the personal barbs to yourselves. R...A...C...E...R...S...RACERS RACERS GOOOOOOOO RACERS!!!

Clearly, you don't know me.
Not only am I not NIT-level but I wouldn't even consider myself CBI eligible.

Geez, Drew

Stallins? Really? You'd think a credentialed guy would be able to SPELL the SEC's coach of the year whether or not he agreed with the choice. At least this blogger alienated the band member "fat kid" (cheap shot) and those oh-so-loose Racer girls (cheaper yet).  Crapastic job, Drew. You're clearly an NIT-level blogger.
