Party at the Butler's house

Brad Stevens and his merry band of Horizon League over-achievers were heading back to Indianapolis tomorrow no matter what.  Unlike you at your high school reunion, though, they're still going to be the hottest thing in town thanks to a 63-56 victory over the second-seeded Kansas State Wildcats.  After 113 years of playing basketball, the Butler Bulldogs are heading to the Final Four.

And, even better, they're hosting the party.

Thanks mostly to Gordon Hayward and Shelvin Mack combining for 38 points and 16 rebounds, the tiny school that was expected to be a major player next year shut the door on the Big 12 power that had all the right ingredients for a trip to the Final Four this year.  In winning their 24th consecutive game, Butler made all the right plays and found themselves in all the right places.  Most importantly, they found themselves on the right side of the three super brilliant points made here on "One Blogging Moment" earlier today.

Before the game, we said the contest would be won on the glass and Butler responded by out-rebounding Kansas State, 34-29.  We said this game could be lost by the Wildcats at the free throw line and Frank Martin's team shot only 7-14.  We also said the game would be won in the back court and Shelvin Mack would need some help from Ronald Nored.  Though Nored's four points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds don't look sexy, he scored his points in the final two minutes and got two of his four steals in that same time.

There was already going to be a party next weekend in Indianapolis.  But, thanks to the complete effort of the Bulldogs, the Butler is going to be the one hosting the bash.

America, get ready for a throwdown.

***It should also be noted that Indiana Hoosier fans are super-pumped about this.  And they also are not the least bit upset that their team has gone 16-46 the past two seasons while former players and commits have found success all over college basketball and other in-state teams have become some of the nation's best squads.  Because they are the most compassionate people on the planet.  And just flat-out kind hearted people.  If the world were only made of Indiana Hoosier fans, it would be a better place.

Party at the Butler's house

(written prior to Sunday's games) Anyone who thinks Butler is a huge underdog isn't very knowledgeable about college basketball.  For starters, they were in the top 25 all season and finished in the top 10.  They have the longest NCAA winning streak and a better record than all of the remaining 6 teams in the tourney, EVEN DUKE.  They were "under-seeded" by the NCAA basically because of the conference they play in.  They really should have been a 2... YES, a 2, or at worst, the best #3 seed.  With 4 regionals, x 2 best seeds gives you the top 8 teams as viewed by the NCAA.  (Example: Ohio St, which Butler BEAT, was a #2 seed) Also, Butler was ranked in every poll in (or right at) the top 10 with the Nation's longest winning streak.  If that doesn't say a 2 or 3 NOTHING DOES.  Enrollment, Money and Conference does play a role in NCAA favortism and tournament seeding.  That is just a fact of life.  HOWEVER, it doesn't skew reality that Butler is a legitamat TOP 10 team and NOT a miracle Cinderella.  The TV will play that angle up to stir up excitement, but it is, in reality a complete CROCK of you know what.  Butler should be favored over the winner of Mich St./Tenn and not a huge dog against the winner of WV/Duke/Baylor if they make it that far.

In conclusion, if you stop reading these nonsense blogs and stop listening to sports talk radio, you'll enjoy sports a whole lot better.

From looking at the ticket prices, I don't think the NCAA will make or lose any money on it.  They sold their tickets long ago.  While they have more fans, Kansas State isn't a program with national stature like, say, Duke or North Carolina.  In other words, I doubt any casual fan would care much.  It's more likely that people will tune in for the "under dog" story of a very small school like Butler.

Also, at the Sweet 16 in St. Louis a few years ago Butler had about 6,000 fans.  That was far more than any other team there and they were huge schools (Florida, the future national champions, with a pathetic fan showing).

Bars and restaurants across Indy will be crammed with fans on Saturday and, God willing, Monday night.  The only loser here is the hotels.  Then again, I imagine West Virginia fans will fill them up.  They travel as well as anyone.

Party at the Butler's house

Butler once again shows that brains can beat braun. the motion offense they run is nice to see in this age of street ball. the fundementals accross the board are what wins games for them. saw a post earlier in the week where they were called boring. well, they held k.s. to 20 points in the first half with great defense. and, i thought it was fun to watch. by forcing k.s. into playing half court offense instead of running. Butler made it rough on them. just like they did the orangemen they other night. brians over braun.

Butler is considered an underdog because of the conference they are from. and, because it's a small school with admission requirements that are not waved for basketball players.  just like corrnell. maybe other college programs should take a look at how those two schools have put together programs. along with st. marys, and gonzagga. schools that have high standards acidemically. and, put school before sports.

to the k.s. fan gripping about the way the game was called. if your team had hit it's free throws it owuld have had as many as if not more than Butler because of the front ends of one on one's they missed.  and, i think that if the refs had called the game fairly. k.s. would'nt have had any players left to play.
mid way through the first half, k.s. players were bending over holding onto their shorts. trying to rest.  and, there were times when they looked tired. which could have contributed to the way they played. hav'nt seen a team that tired that early in a game for a long time.

and, being an I.U. fan since i was a kid. i am overjoyed at Butlers sucess. it's all a part of Indiana basketball. and, i can promise. the heavy majority of Purdue, I.U., Indiana State, and, any other fan of an indiana college is pulling for the bulldogs as long as they are not playing against their team. ha,ha,ha.   GO BUTLER>  MAKE INDIANA PROUD<>  to be honest. they already have.

Once again Butler showed that brains can defeat braun. would be funny if all these other schools players had to complete the admissions requirements for Butler. because if they did. they would'nt be playing college ball.
i think it's great that a school that puts acidemics before basketball is in the final four. and, that corrnell did as well as it did. sets an example for other schools.
i can promise you that all of INDIANA is cheering for the bulldogs. i have been an indiana fan since i was a kid. but, as an indiana fan you cheer for any other school from the state as long as they are not playing indiana.
in addressing sour grape guy, if k.s. had hit a few more front ends of one and ones. they would have had just as many foul shots as Butler. k.s. was given many a chance to either close the gap or go ahead a number of times.
to be honest. i think they were tired. you could see the k.s. players reaching down and holding onto their shorts. leaning over to rest every chance they had 10 minutes into the game.
in this game Butler did what it has done the whole tourement.  they ran their motion offense for the best shot they could get. and played a smothering defense. good, solid, fundemental basketball. whereas, ks, sryacuse, and utep all tried to play street ball. and, when they had to slow down and actually run an offense. they had problems. brains over braun. gotta love it!!!

Did you consider the fact that maybe just maybe Butler was underseeded by the committee?? Who showed that they weren't very adept at seeding teams.(i.e. ND at a #6?).

They were 28-4, ranked in the Top 10 in the final polls and ranked in the Top 10 in RPI. They were far better than a #5 seed and you know it.

So you're saying a team seeded fifth in their region isn't overachieving by making the Final Four?  And a team that beat the #1 and #2 seeds in a three-day span isn't overchieving?

Overachievers??? Butler entered the season ranked in the Top 15 of both the AP and Coaches poll. They were a popular pre-season darkhorse pick to make it to the Final Four. They had a great regular season and are amongst the best teams in the country as demonstrated by their 24 game winning streak. This is one of the worst blogs/columns I have ever read and shows a severe lack of knowledge.

Sour grapes??  Be happy for the underdog!  And are you kidding about the NCAA wanting Butler to win??  They are a school of 4500 students and won't come close to bringing the crowd base or revenue they could generate from any of the larger schools.  Sometimes the better team just wins!

Once again Hollywood/CBS and the NCAA combine to ruin what could have been an exciting tournament.  Instead of letting the best teams in the nation compete on equal grounds.  We are forced into some script writers idea what sports is about.  Thursday night all we heard was CRAWFORD, CRAWFORD, CRAWFORD before he'd done anything but touch the ball.  At some point in the second half someone notices that Kansas State University has committed twice their normal amount of fouls and Xavier has practically committed none.  Wow imagine Xavier has more points via free throws than the Wildcats.  When it gets too blatantly obvious and the referees or forced into calling fouls on the other team the game degenerates into a real basketball game.

Again today we see the same pattern the only way Cinderella can win is if KSU doesn’t get fouled and they get an inordinate amount of free throws.  Toward the end after the announcers have proclaimed Butler a member of the final four back come KSU to lead.  This isn’t in the script….need more fouls.  After back to back fouls Cinderella has regained possession of their wrongful place in the tournament.  While the announcers talk about how noisy it will be when they return home.  All I can say is I hope Cinderella’s carriage is returned to its original state with all the pumpkin headed NCAA members and CBS broadcasters   in it.

By the way isn’t Indianapolis also the home of the NCAA?
