The Montreal Canadiens can add another impressive feat to their long, storied history: completly shutting down Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin .

For the first time in Ovechkin's NHL career -- regular season and playoffs combined -- the former first overall pick failed to register an offensive statistic. No goals. No assists. No shots on net.

It is just the fourth time in Ovechkin's career that he failed to record a shot. But in each of those other games, he recorded an assist.

Ovechkin finished with a little more than 26 minutes of ice time on Thursday. The regular season shots leader for each of the past six years, he fired three shots wide of the net and had five attempts blocked.

Habs' complete shutdown of Ovechkin a first

The Habs' defensive scheme against Ovie last night was brilliant.  Turns out most of Montreal's top blueliners are lefties; so when Ovechkin was making his charge towards the net from the left side, the Canadiens' defensemen would backskate and then simply throw their sticks out with their left hands to deflect his shot (which would be heading toward the middle of the ice).  Basic premise, but I can't remember how many times Ovechkin's shots were deflected over Halak's head or ended up in the stands...totally effective.  Of course, Ovechkin is such an amazing talent that you just know he'll make the necessary adjustments for Game the Habs better be ready.  But last night, you could tell Alex let his frustrations get the best of him and he was never really a threat to do any damage towards the latter part of the game.

Great game and an impressive win for Montreal and its fans!

Habs' complete shutdown of Ovechkin a first

I'm a huge Habs fan and I loved what my team did the first game, but this guy is just way too good and way too consistent to do this again. I wouldn't be surprised if he registered 10+ shots next game.
