Reds looking to sign Matthews

It looks like Gary Matthews Jr., released by the Mets last week, is working on a minor-league deal with the Reds. Some reports have said the deal is done, but John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer said via Twitter that it's still being finalized.

Matthews, a 35-year-old former All-Star outfielder, was a bust in New York, batting just .190. The Reds would be his eighth major-league team. This is by no means an impact move for the Reds, but after scoring one run in a three-game sweep in Seattle last weekend, they might be feeling a little desperate.

Reds looking to sign Matthews

A veteran with no or little cost for the Reds.  Not an impact move but more of an insurance signing.

If/when the Reds are in contention in September and a call up is needed a vet would be better than a rookie.
