Phillies' Utley, Polanco placed on DL

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley and third baseman Placido Polanco have been placed on the disabled list. The team called up Greg Dobbs and Brian Bocock from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take their places.

Utley suffered a thumb injury on a head-first slide into second base in Monday's loss to the Reds. He was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday in Cincinnati.

Polanco received a cortisone shot in his left elbow on Monday. He has inflammation in the elbow, and possibly more.

There's no word on how long either will be on the disabled list, but it's sure the Phillies won't be calling up equal replacements. Dobbs was 2-for-17 with one RBI since being outrighted to Lehigh Valley on June 23. Bocock was hitting .179 for the IronPigs.

Both players are leading their respective positions in All-Star voting released on Tuesday.

UPDATE: Dobbs will start at third for the Phillies Tuesday night against the Reds, batting second. Wilson Valdez is playing second and batting eighth.

comparing the Phillies to last year's Mets by saying they are slumping is not a good comparison. Slumps and season long injuries are completely different. Ryan Howard in a slump is better than anything the Mets had at first last year, same with Werth in right. But if you want to use that rationale, the Mets' only healthy "star", Wright, was in a season long slump

And Matt Holliday still wasn't safe against the Padres in '07...

The Phillies were selling out games and their fanbase was voting in Placido Polanco. Big deal. What else do the 3rd place Phillies have to look forward too? AHHHH HA HA HA
Wait just a minute... the Phillies have had one injury after another... like the Mets had last year.

But AT LEAST the Phillies are giving it an effort and are still in the race... ONLY 3 1/2 back... which is NOT much at all. Especially when we know how the Mets can cough up 7 game leads in a matter of days.

Injuries are a b*tch.. and right now they are hitting the Phillies hard... and not mention the Phillies have also had one of the worst offensive droughts a MLB can have... and they are ONLY 3 1/2 of the Braves and 2 back of the Mets (and the Mets have played two more games).

Makes you wonder... with all the bad luck and bad offense the Phillies have had... what the hell are the Braves and the Mets doing that they are only up by 3 1/2 and 2 games over the Phillies???

Really... what have you been doing?

Good. Now two deserving players can start the All-Star game instead of those bums.

All I've got to say to you is... ROOOOCCCCCKKKKTTTTOOOOOBBBBEEEEERRR

RRRR THIS JACKASS.

Sorry for your loss, the last couple years... I know it's hard.

Try not to be poor loser, although I know it's hard for you.

More excuses for Placido Polancos numbers. He bats 2nd he fields better boo hoo. The guy is NOT an All Star this season. Scott Rolen and David Wright are far better players. Take the cheese steak from your phat mouths and slap yourself. I voted Chase Utley and Jayson Werth for the AS game because I am not a blind homer like LOVEUTLEY. Typical "closet" case if I ever saw one.

Too me it looks like Phillies fans are just out there supporting their team.  Maybe the other teams would like to have fans that actually support their team in something like the All Star voting.  If you want your players in start voting more for them or run promotions like the Marlins do.  You have to vote like 25 times for all Marlins and you get a free ticket.

But Wright's on base pct and slg pct is higher than Polanco. I still say Rolen belongs with the year he is having. Rolen or Wright should start and the other should still make it.
