Peavy DL could make White Sox bidders for Lee

Jake Peavy Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune said Wednesday that Jake Peavy appears headed to the disabled list after straining a muscle in his back Tuesday night. Peavy had an MRI exam Wednesday, but the team has not yet released the results.

Even the best-case scenario, a handful of missed starts, is a blow to the White Sox, who have used just five starters this season and had seen Peavy begin to round into form after a brutal start to the season. Peavy has allowed three or fewer earned runs in his past six starts.

The upside is that Chicago appears to have a good option to replace Peavy in the rotation. Daniel Hudson has been lights out for Triple-A Charlotte, 7-2 with a 2.64 ERA in his past 10 starts, with opponents batting .194 against him.

Rogers wonders whether Peavy's injury might push the White Sox into the picture for Seattle left-hander Cliff Lee. As he points out, it would serve the dual purposes of adding a top-shelf pitcher while keeping him from division rival Minnesota, which has been rumored to be the front-runner for Lee.

-- David Andriesen

UPDATE: Peavy was placed on the DL Wednesday afternon after the MRI showed what the team called a "detached" muscle, which doesn't sound too good. They promoed Jeffrey Marquez, though it's not clear who is going to take Peavy's scheduled start on Sunday.

Parkernuts...... as a Twins fan that I am, I suggested this two weeks ago to my pals in Minny that I would not rule out the Sox going after Lee even before Peavy got hurt. Every year at the trade deadline, I become a White Sox fan, because they make the calculated risk of trading for players, or picking up contracts (see Alex Rios). With Peavy's injury, I make them the odds-on favorite to acquire Lee.

However, I do not think it will take as many players as you suggest. I think Hudson and Flowers would be all it takes.

I subscribe from the theory that you play to win today, and any time you can trade prospects - guys who haven't done a dang thing at the major league level - and obtain a proven commodity - an all-star - like Cliff Lee, you do it.

Worst case scenario is you get two supplemental first-round draft picks in next year's draft which replace the prospects you gave up.

Mariner's need a catcher.  Wouldn't be surprised if Kenny packaged a deal with Tyler Flowers to get C. Lee

I'll take KW over Hendry any day of the week.  At least he makes attempts to go after players, I'll take that over sitting around any day.  Instead of adding, would you rather they start selling or sit around and do nothing?

I am assuming by your logo you are a Twins fan?  If the White Sox aren't a playoff team and they are currently sitting AHEAD of your Twins, what does that make the Twins?

Buckeye.. Buckeye.. please stop dreaming and wake up the Sox don't have enough to offer the Mariners for him and if they did make a deal they would have to give up the kitchen sink for him! It's obvious the Marniers only picked him up to deal him off! I also believe he's a free agent after this year so what would the Sox do then when they can't resign him! They just signed Peavy to a big deal so I don't see them even having a chance to sign him to a long term deal. This guy is going to the highest bidder next year! It wouldn't surprise me to see him in a Yankees uniform! Also for Kenny going out and getting Dotel and Griffey Jr. please look what that did for us! This guy should be run out of town with Jim Henry right behind him!

Seattle has the pitching (lee and Felix to name a few) and would be crazy to trade away Lee now. Seattle needs to combine some of their young farm players with what is available on the free market this upcoming winter.
