Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports via Twitter that Royals outfielder David DeJesus suffered a complete ligament tear in his thumb Thursday night and will be out for the year after surgery.
DeJesus hurt his right thumb crashing into the fence at Yankee Stadium, trying to catch a ball hit by Derek Jeter, who ended up with an inside-the-park homer.
The team placed DeJesus on the disabled list earlier in the day and recalled Alex Gordon.
DeJesus, batting .318, was the subject of plenty of trade interest in recent weeks, but now the Royals will miss out on the bounty he might have brought. They have a $6 million club option on him for 2011.
