Ludwick return a boost for Cardinals

Ryan Ludwick The Cardinals are by all accounts working hard to add Roy Oswalt to their pitching staff, but they already added an All-Star outfielder Saturday.

Ryan Ludwick, out with a calf strain since June 26, was activated before the Cardinals' game against the Cubs in Chicago. He started in right field.

Offense has been a concern for St. Louis, which fired hitting coach Milt Thompson on Thursday night. Ludwick, an All-Star in 2008 when he hit .299 with 37 homers, was batting .273 this season when he was hurt.

The Cardinals have been piecing things together in right with Nick Stavinoha (now injured), Jon Jay and Randy Winn, and not faring too badly, but having a healthy Ludwick is a nice upgrade. Cardinals fans should be keeping their fingers crossed that Ludwick stays healthy -- calf strains are notoriously tough to shake and he already suffered one setback in rehab while running on a treadmill.

To make room for Ludwick on the active roster, the Cardinals sent down right-hander P.J. Walters.

It's still not fixed; Milt Thompson was the hitting coach for the Phillies, and he was fired. However Mark McGwire is the hitting coach for the Cardinals, and he has not been fired.

"Offense has been a concern for St. Louis, which Milt Thompson on Thursday night."

Oops. If Milt Thompson is the Cardinals' pitching coach, maybe that's part of their problem.

Milt Thompson, for those who don't know, was the Phillies' hitting coach that was fired this week. The Cardinals' pitching coach is the esteemed Dave Duncan. What that has to do with Ryan Ludwick is a mystery I'm still trying to unravel.
