The Red Sox have put Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day disabled list and activated Mike Lowell -- and what's more, Lowell is starting at first base and batting sixth against the Indians tonight at Fenway Park.
Lowell's future has been discussed ad nauseum -- so here are the Cliff's Notes:
Lowell entered the season hurt and old. He wasn't playing well and then he was hurt some more, so was put on the DL and forgotten about. He got better, but the Red Sox had no use for him. There were some deals out there for him at the deadline, but nothing worked out. Youkilis jammed his right thumb on Monday night and the Red Sox needed a first baseman. Lowell was sitting there, already drawing a rather hefty paycheck from Boston, so they activated him and we'll see if he can keep the Sox in the playoff hunt.
