Omar Minaya Omar Minaya may be out as the Mets' general manager if the team doesn't have a big finish, Sports Illustrated 's Jon Heyman reports .

Heyman cites "people familiar with the situation" as saying only a good finish could save the jobs of Minaya and manager Jerry Manuel.

"I focus on doing my job today, and that's all I can control," Minaya told Heyman.

Owner Fred Wilpon had insinuated earlier this month that Minaya's job was safe.

The Mets entered Tuesday's game with Florida with a 62-62 record, better than last season's 70-92 mark, but hardly up to New York expectations.

Heyman lists Kevin Towers, John Ricco, Wayne Krivsky and Pat Gillick as potential replacements. Ricco and Krivsky are already with the Mets. He also lists Bob Melvin as the "leading candidate" to replace Manuel with Wally Backman as another possibility.

Minaya on the hot seat?

Carter can be a good choice but not atr this junction, the team needs someone to light a fire under their butts ,I don't know if Carter can do that. THe bigger problem will be the Wilpons , ever since Jeffery took over Baseball operations of this team they have gone down.He tries to run the team like a Real Estate Business not a Baseball business they are 2 different thing. I wish we could get rid of the owners first...

Minaya on the hot seat?

A fresh start would be good and I don't know either way if Krivsky's one year learning the team"dirties" him or not. I just mentioned what I read when he was hired. I do believe ownership is thinking about revenue and I somehow do not think that they have to be worrying about "sitting with the fans" as they can sit anywhere they like. Bobby Valentine brought the organization winning baseball and he may be a good choice. I thought he was involved with that group trying to purchase the Rangers. Then he was rumored with.. I believe it was the Marlins. Wally Backman is my choice simply because of the way he played and I think his fiery personality would be a good lift, for the fan base and the team which is most important.  I think most sports fans realize winning cures alot. Is Backman a winner? I think so and I wouldn't mind seeing him getting a shot. Gary Carter? I don't know what he is doing now but I do remember he wanted the job, probably still does.

The Mets would be better served by giving the GM job to Pat Gillick and the managers job to either Bobby Valentine or Wally Backman. They need a manager who has a little fire and may instill some pride into this underachiving team. They have a good young base to build from with Davis ,Thole and Neise mixed in with the veterans could give them a good start for next season

I don't want a new GM from within. Sometimes you need a fresh voice from another (hopefully more successful) organization. You don't want to promote from within when the organization flounders. Kevin Towers sound sintriguing, although he'll have to get used to not having Yankee $$$$ to spend.
As far as doing something for your fan base, well, Bobby Knight once said if you base your decisions on what the fans want, you'll soon be sitting with them.

Minaya on the hot seat?

I read last year the Mets brought in Wayne krivsky in case they fired Omar Minaya. If for some reason Krivsky isn't clicking with ownership then I think they would turn to John Ricco as I remember also reading the mets would prefer to hire from within as to get someone who is already familiar with the organization. If Jerry Manuel is to get fired they have been mentioning Bob Melvin as a replacement and also saying if they fire Minaya or clean house as they put it that the job could go to Wally Backman. I think that if Minaya gets canned the job goes to backman because it will definitely make the fans happy and the Wilpons are concerned about revenue.

PAT Gillick is still under contract w the Phillies, heis retained as a special assistant at one half his salary he earned as GM, he is unenemployable as a GM for 12 months after he resigns w the Phillies, glad the Phillies made that move w Gillick.
