Brawl after Marlins throw at Morgan

Nyjer Morgan
It seemed like a matter of when, not if, the Marlins threw at the Nationals' Nyjer Morgan on Wednesday night.

Everyone in the ballpark knew payback was likely after the outfielder barrelled over Marlins catcher Brett Hayes on Tuesday night, causing a season-ending shoulder injury. It came in Wednesday's fourth inning, when Chris Volstad hit Morgan. Morgan responded by stealing second and third, with the Nationals already trailing 14-3.

Then Morgan came up again in the sixth and the fireworks really started, as Volstad threw a ball well behind him. According to this video and accounts of those at the game via Twitter, Morgan charged the mound and took a few wild swings at Volstad, connecting with a left, before being taken down by a Gaby Sanchez clothesline. Volstad then got a couple of punches in on Morgan as benches emptied. This wasn't your normal baseball scrum, this was a real fight.

Morgan has put up quite a tally lately: allegedly throwing a ball at fans and drawing a seven-game suspension, mowing down two catchers (though at least the one against Hayes looked clean), apparently cursing a Marlins fan Tuesday night, then inciting a bench-clearing brawl.

UPDATE: Nationals pitcher Doug Slaten plunked Sanchez in the midsection in the seventh, earning the hook for himself and manager Jim Riggleman.

Brawl after Marlins throw at Morgan

"Totslly classless game by Morgan. First off he should have known it was coming. Take it and cry in the locker room after the game. 14-3 game and he steals 2 bases. Personally I would have plugged him in the leg. See how he runs after that."

Sorry, but I have to disagree here...obviously Morgan has some issues, but the collision with Hayes was a clean play.  Maybe Morgan would have been better advised to slide but any number of players would have made the same decision on the play at the plate.  It is unfortunate that Hayes got hurt but that's a risk of the game for a catcher in a play at the plate in extra innings.  IMO, the Marlins had no cause to throw at Morgan at all in the 4th, but once they did it the whole thing should have been over.

As for the steals, well its only the 4th inning and the Marlins are holding him on first, so obviously they thought he might steal...big lead but the game was far from over (notice the Marlins scored 9 runs after the 4th inning)....if you don't like getting run on, pick him off, pitch out, make a better throw to second and third.  If you get run on and get beat bad in the game "take it and cry in the locker room" don't throw at the guy because you can't get him out.

"He charges the mound, takes a flying swing at the catch and then gets pummelled by the entire team."

Who is "the catch"?  He took a swing at, and hit, the pitcher.  Then, yes, he got a cheap shot from behind and ended up under a pile of Marlins.  Kind of expected really -- you think any of the Marlins could take on "the entire team" of the Nationals or any other team?  So what, he got his shot in face to face with the pitcher before he got hit from behind.

"Someone in the NATS organization needs to let Little Man know if he would have slid 2 days earlier it would have been a non-issue"

Someone in the Marlins organization needs to tell their players that collisions at the plate like with Hayes are part of the game (the one with the cardinals was out of line) and if you don't like it, choose a profession other than major league catcher.  None of this happens if the Marlins don't get overly sensitive about a clean play at the plate that resulted in an unfortunate injury and start throwing at people, and then throw another hissy because somebody had the audacity to, after they intentionally put him on base by beaning him, actually do what he's paid to do and steal two basis in the 4th inning.

Brawl after Marlins throw at Morgan

Reminded me of how boxers even after getting their A## handed to them, raise their hands up after that final bell. This dude is obviously not the brightest bulb so it doesn't surprise me. This is one of a handful of just plain stupid moves by this blip on the radar. My favorite was him trying so hard to hit the catcher while running home that he doesn't even touch the plate and has to run back to get it. What a joke of a ballplayer. At least he's good at raising his hands so when he's arrested in the near future the police shouldn't have a tough time cuffing the moron.

I agree Morgan was in the wrong, except for one thing- stealing bases. Not a great tactical move down by 10 runs or whatever, but still, a player tries to steal a base, you throw him out. If you can't throw him out, don't act offended like it's a violation of some gentleman's code. In this case, Morgan was a punk, but the Marlins collectively were punks in turn, including their manager, based on how they responded. If the Marlins players themselves were any better than Morgan they would have looked the other way.

Fortunately we won't be seeing much of either team from here on out.

Brawl after Marlins throw at Morgan

Where was this fighting spirit out of both the Florida Marlins and Washington Nationals when it was really needed the most which was from Opening Day up to and including yesterday? Please spare me this fake display of intensity, machismo, and bravado on September 1st because it is weak and is coming from two teams that are clearly frustrated as to how their respective seasons are going to ultimately turn out. This is nothing more than an irrelevant September brawl. Nothing to see here folks. Keep it moving.

They need to suspend Morgan for the rest of this season. He's way out of control and MLB needs to step in and take action. He should have gotten arrested for throwing that ball at the fan. He should have been suspended for cussing out the fan on the field at the game the other day. MLB should have fined him for the incident with the Cardinals. Now what MLB? He's got pitchers throwing at him at 2 of his at-bats tonight and it won't end there. I'm sure the Cardinals will be gunning for this guy come next season as well as Volstad again next year. If Hayes comes back from the injury Morgan caused to him on a very insignificant play then he most likely is going to call for some chin music.

Nationals should deal him while they can. This is the second coming of Milton Bradley, but he makes Bradley seem like a saint.

He charges the mound, takes a flying swing at the catch and then gets pummelled by the entire team. Once they get his nappy ass out from under the scrum he raises his arms like he beat up Mike Tyson. Never mind me or anyone else telling you to take a seat little man. Bob Watson will be sending you the letter....FEDEX most likely.

Someone in the NATS organization needs to let Little Man know if he would have slid 2 days earlier it would have been a non-issue. Guess the NAT are trying to keep up with the Redskins and be perennial bottom dwellers of their respective sport.

Brawl after Marlins throw at Morgan

My how things have changed since the Pirates traded him for Milledge. Milledge was considered immature, a trouble maker, the works and Nyjer Morgan was the good teammate who tried his hardest. Now things have changed, Lastings may be lacking power but his attitude and work ethic took a complete 180 and Nyjer looks like he's targetting catchers and throwing gloves.
