Brenly bows out of Cubs search

Posted on: September 25, 2010 1:18 pm

Bob Brenly, the former Diamondbacks manager and current Cubs announcer, told the Chicago Tribune he's withdrawing his name from consideration to manage the Cubs.

"I said all along I would like to get back on the field if the situation was right," Brenly said. "But for personal and professional reasons, I just think this is not the right time for me."

Not the right time, or just not the right team? Brenly has said he wants to get back on the field, and there will be plenty of jobs open this winter. But few, if any, are going to be more appealing than the Cubs job. Why not interview with the team he's already asociated with?

"I'm just going to say for personal and professional reasons," he said. "There's a lot of things that  enter into it, but I have my reasons and that's it."

Brenly bows out of Cubs search

Few days late but I totally agree with you.  How many games this year that I have seen 2 men on no one out. Maybe 6, 7th inning , down 1 or 2 runs.   Then Lee, Ramirez, Soriano even Byrd get up to bat and hit away. Double play, strike out, pop out. No runs score.  Terrible. No fundamental play when it comes to guys making millions of dollars to just swing away and in the Cubs case, not win ball games.  Why is that we can get these type of managers/players that don't want to do anything but lose.  My gosh Arizona, Florida have not been in the league long at all and have won championships already. Minnesota has one of the smallest markets and have won twice in the last 25 years.  They have won several division titles. The Cubs keep getting personnel lately that just does not make sense. The Soriano deal is one that is so mind blowing. Just look at his career stats.  No way does it stand for a wage of more than 16 million a year for 8 years.  He is probably one of the worst defensive players in the game.  Then Hendry brings in Bradley. Been around the league.  No one wants due to his attitude. Had career year in Texas. Wow. 80 rbis.  Pays him 10 million per for 3 years. And we got rid of Mark Grace because they did not want to pay him. The 1990's hits and doubles leader for the whole major leagues.  Something wrong with the mindset of the general managers we get. Agreed,,,, GET HENDRY OUT OF THERE.  And it is time to get back to fundamental baseball. Too long gone.  Good job, sportsnutso... I will vote for you for general manager of the Cubs.. go for it.

Brenly bows out of Cubs search

I would love to see the Cubs totally revamp the way they even play the game. Stealing bases, drawing walks, bunting and moving the runners. SMALL,SMART BALL. Look at Tampa Bay. Whe Wrigley field HOMERUN attitude has not produced anything while winning records back to back for the first time in 50 years LAST YEAR. We are back to our losing ways with another average team. It is time to change the entire mentality of the CUBS or we might lose another 100 years. Jim Hendry....THANK YOU....BYE!!!!

The Cubs need to keep Sandberg out of the equation. We do NOT need a sentimental favorite to manage the Cubs. The only person I can think of that would be worse would be Ozzy after he get's shown the door. Sorry to hear that Brenly won't be part of the process, I think he would have done a great job.

It doesn't seem to me like this is a big downer for the Cubs.
Is Brenly a great manager? He won a W.S. title with R Johnson and C Schilling. Kinda hard to lose with those guys.
Otherwise, he's a TV announcer who played baseball.

Brenly bows out of Cubs search

It hurts to see Brenly not wanting the Cubs job but not only do I see why do to his son but who would want to have to coach someone like Soriano, and Zambrano.   Hopefully they will land Girardi but if they don't in the best interest of this organization they really need to hire Sandberg.  Get him some good coaches around him, Grace would be a good one for hitting coach.  Pitching coach-Maddux.  I like Dernier as their 3rd base coach and hopefully teach some of these guys how to steal a base.  After they let Theriot go I don't believe they have a total of 10 stolen bases on this team. They have a lot of fixing.  Would like to see them pick Lilly back up.  Also Theriot (not likely).  The Cubs organization really needs to make a good choice for their next manager or I really believe all those years of not winning and sold out ball games are going to come to an end. It is time for a team that is a winner.  AND GET RID OF HENDRY and his signing guys that are bad for the team and have not proven as at least solid stars (ie Soriano, Bradley).

Brenly bows out of Cubs search

A lot can be read in to Bob Brenly taking his hat out of the ring.  The single most important thing that plays into this is Michael Brenly, Bob's son. is one of the hot young prospects in the Cubs farm system.  A good father would do nothing to interfere with his son's carreer.  Bob being at the helm of the mother ship could certainly jeopordize Michael's advancement.

Brenly bows out of Cubs search

As much as I wish Bob Brenly would remain in contention for the Cubs job, I heard sometime ago it would be a tough gig for him because of his son being in the system and climbing up quickly. Someone close to him mentioned it would just be too difficult managing a team if his son the rookie was sitting there, too. Wish I could remember where I heard it...Comcast? ESPN Radio? Sorry to not have the specifics.
That being said, as a life-long Cubs fan, now that Brenly is withdrawing his name, I'd like to see Ricketts put his big bucks on the table and go after Joe Girardi. I know Ryne Sandberg is the sentimental favorite for a lot of the younger fans out there, and he certainly has done everything asked of him so far, but I still believe Girardi is just as much a Cubs guy as Ryno. And he's really more prepared at this point to deal with ALL the crap that would come his way if sitting in that position.

Good for him.  It's enough to call games for them.
