A.J. Burnett The Yankees will go with a three-man rotation in the American League Division Series against the Twins, eschewing the $82.5 million-man, A.J. Burnett.

The New York Post is reporting CC Sabathia would pitch a fourth game against the Twins if it gets to that point. Sabathia will start Game 1 on Wednesday at Target Field. He'd be followed by Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes.

Burnett was 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA in two starts against the Twins this season, but was 10-15 with a 5.26 ERA overall and 1-7 with a 6.61 ERA in the last two months of the season, while batters are hitting .300/.380/.494 in the 12 games he's started since Aug. 2.

Sabathia is fine with going on short rest in Game 4 on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

"I told Joe [Girardi] and Dave [Pelland] I will be prepared to do that," Sabathia told the Post. "If I get enough rest, I want to pitch."

Sabathia has experience with three days of rest, going 3-1 with a 1.01 ERA in four such starts. Last year he needed just three days between starts for Game 4 of the ALCS and Game 4 of the World Series. He went 1-0 with a  2.46 ERA in those starts, both Yankees victories.

UPDATE: The Yankees have made it official, CBSSports.com senior writer Danny Knobler reports .

Brooklyn, i didnt bring up the past for several reasons.  the central and the west were a joke this year.  since you want to go there, history will repeat itself. numbers dont lie, so 0-9 is terrible but i hate to say it you have to win once. its baseball.

Yawn. I'd be more worried playing anyone in the AL East in a short series (Orioles included) than the Twins & their pathetic starting four. The problem is getting a 4th starter ready for the Rays in the ALCS.

Sure Kaplan I can respond...This comment is nothing more than foolish. Prime example is the Yankee Tiger ALDS where everyone felt the same way as Xbomber did and the Yankees even won game 1 in that series and then lost 3 straight. To say you would be more worried to fact the Orioles then a team who has played at such a high level in the second half of the year is silly and nothing more.

Tonight we get to jump on Liriano first, who has a +8 ERA in his last 3 starts.

Or mask the fact that the Yankees are 0-9 against left handed pitching in the last month of the season.

I guess playing 500 ball since August, going 9-17 in their las 26 games and not beating a left hander (as I said 0-9) in a month is nothing to worry about.

Also, Kaplan, you keep referancing the Yankee lineup...have you not learned that the Yankees did not win anything from 2002-2008 while having one of if not, the best lineup every year. It was not until Cashman introduced CC and AJ did the Yankees finally win..get it pitching matters in the post season.

If anyone was surprised by A.J. getting skipped then they shouldn't be allowed to comment!!...........Hey Sox fans, what time is game one of your series?  I'm sorry, I forgot they'll be watching from home.

Brooklyn no doubt can you write and make valid points. but forget history for a second and just take pitching matchups.  our first 3 matches up no doubt better then twinkies 3.  our bullpen is more solid not that twins arent they do have arsenol but clearly the twins have a better record its still the central. playing teams like the tigers, white sox, cleveland and kc are nothing like the teams in the east.  so i dont like to look at records i look at players performance.  the bottom line is that the yankees have experience all around, they can hit, field, hit the long ball and their top 3 can pitch.  there bullpen is flawless.  i would be scared if cc doesnt win tonite but i like the matchups in favor of the yanks.  that is coming from a true yankee fan.  twins are just looking to pass round one which they havent done in years.

Burnett and Chamberline need to go after this year. Not earning their money. There's better talent out there.

Well put.  Either way despite the history between these two teams....the air feels different in this one, and Target Field is a new domain for playoff atmosphere.  I think this series will be a fun one to watch and will bring in some of the highest ratings.  I think hands down these two teams are the best in the the American League right now, if not the best in the whole league.  It should be fun to watch!!!!
