A.J. Burnett The Yankees will go with a three-man rotation in the American League Division Series against the Twins, eschewing the $82.5 million-man, A.J. Burnett.

The New York Post is reporting CC Sabathia would pitch a fourth game against the Twins if it gets to that point. Sabathia will start Game 1 on Wednesday at Target Field. He'd be followed by Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes.

Burnett was 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA in two starts against the Twins this season, but was 10-15 with a 5.26 ERA overall and 1-7 with a 6.61 ERA in the last two months of the season, while batters are hitting .300/.380/.494 in the 12 games he's started since Aug. 2.

Sabathia is fine with going on short rest in Game 4 on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

"I told Joe [Girardi] and Dave [Pelland] I will be prepared to do that," Sabathia told the Post. "If I get enough rest, I want to pitch."

Sabathia has experience with three days of rest, going 3-1 with a 1.01 ERA in four such starts. Last year he needed just three days between starts for Game 4 of the ALCS and Game 4 of the World Series. He went 1-0 with a  2.46 ERA in those starts, both Yankees victories.

UPDATE: The Yankees have made it official, CBSSports.com senior writer Danny Knobler reports .

Agree with Brooklyn, too.  We Yanks fans should root hard for them, but why be willfully blind and write fiction over reality.  Reality is: we haven't been good for months, Twins have been excellent, and any objective analyst would rate Yanks' chances as slim to none.

Hey Kaplan I am a big Yankee fan but I must say you made some bad points.

but we excelled the whole year with the pitching that we have.

The Yankee pitching was very good the first half of the year and it was because of their pitching that the Yankees did not fall to behind Tampa at the start of the year wen they were red hot. Let us not forget that the pitching carried the Yankees into first where they remained for most of the year until Pettite went down and then AJ imploded. Joe Girardi himself, during his weekly radio spot on WFAN, stated that it was the pitching that led to the Yankees missing out at first (kinda obvious). The Yankees certainly did not excel the whole year and the last month and a half is evidence of that as the Yankees were 26 - 26 over their last 52 games (only .500 ball) and were 9-17 in their last 26 games.

the twins had no competition.  the central is a joke as well as the west this year

Why say this? Your only setting yourself up for a downfall on the site. The Twins are a good team and cannot be faulted for the division they play in. In fact since the allstar break the Twins own the best record in the AL. This is a very ignorant statement and its poster like you that make yankee fans look silly.

We obviously know the yanks are looking to win the world series as the twinkies are just looking to pass round one

And you know this because you have met with the twins players and management? Stupid comment. Every team wants to win it all but no team looks past the first round or they will not make it past the first round. So every team starts by just trying to win round 1.

i dont think it matters whos going out there, we will win it.

If you believe this then you don't know baseball PERIOD!

I love the Yankees and would love to see nothing more then then the Yankees win the WS again. But I have to be honest, seeing how they played down the stretch concerns me. I am not sure if the Yankees pitching is capable of carrying this team to repeat. Because the Twins pithing staff is not made up of true number 1 types the Yankees can win this round with sub-par pitching but, the scary thing is the Twins pitching can be effective enough that they can win this series.

The Yankees will live and die from how well their pitchers perform, they will not win only with hitting as we have seen in years past.

Your all muts (except those yankee fans).  Everyone wants to hate the fact that the Yankees are not only the defending world series champions but we excelled the whole year with the pitching that we have.  Not once have we looked at the fact that we wouldnt make the playoffs.  yes, Tampa played better (by a game) but they dogged it out as well.  the twins had no competition.  the central is a joke as well as the west this year.  We obviously know the yanks are looking to win the world series as the twinkies are just looking to pass round one.  We are looking for a repeat nothing less.  i dont think it matters whos going out there, we will win it.

The Yankees didn't lose the division on purpose... I think its stupid to think they lost on purpose to simply not have to face a certain pitcher. If a team has that mindset then they might as well let someone else take their place in the postseason cause they obviously dont think they're good enough. Facing Cliff Lee doesnt compare to a potential opposing three man rotation of either Cain,  Lincecum, Sanchez, even Bumbgarner, or the Halladay, Oswalt, Hamels trio in Philly. These AL teams are playing like crap lately and as a Yankee fan, I hope we get hot or something, as much as I dont think it will take alot to get to the World Series, I think it is going to take a valiant effort to win the Series this year against those NL teams...

Maybe Joe was resting his players in the end, therefore the bad games at the end of the season. He also may have done it to avoid playing Cliff Lee by losing, doubt it, but it sounds like a good idea. The East division winner was going to play Texas, so why not throw the division so you can avoid Cliff Lee twice. Not a bad idea when winning the Series not the division is what this whole season is about anyway.
