A.J. Burnett The Yankees will go with a three-man rotation in the American League Division Series against the Twins, eschewing the $82.5 million-man, A.J. Burnett.

The New York Post is reporting CC Sabathia would pitch a fourth game against the Twins if it gets to that point. Sabathia will start Game 1 on Wednesday at Target Field. He'd be followed by Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes.

Burnett was 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA in two starts against the Twins this season, but was 10-15 with a 5.26 ERA overall and 1-7 with a 6.61 ERA in the last two months of the season, while batters are hitting .300/.380/.494 in the 12 games he's started since Aug. 2.

Sabathia is fine with going on short rest in Game 4 on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

"I told Joe [Girardi] and Dave [Pelland] I will be prepared to do that," Sabathia told the Post. "If I get enough rest, I want to pitch."

Sabathia has experience with three days of rest, going 3-1 with a 1.01 ERA in four such starts. Last year he needed just three days between starts for Game 4 of the ALCS and Game 4 of the World Series. He went 1-0 with a  2.46 ERA in those starts, both Yankees victories.

UPDATE: The Yankees have made it official, CBSSports.com senior writer Danny Knobler reports .

Good. Burnett was awful this season.  Him & Vazquez will do something like what Phil Hughes did against the Indians in 2007, have a bad season in the rotation & come up big out of the bullpen

CDAWG, I AM A RED SOX fan, I don't have to point out their inadequacies, they were not good enough period! The Yankees won 95 games, they have the best pitcher in the American League, a All star line up, They play a team that they seem to have a mental edge over, then if they beat Minnesota they play a Tampa team that has good pitching, but not that great of a line up (Longoria is hurt) and thats even if they play Tampa! If Sabathia wins game one of the ALDS, Bring on the Phillies, how is that for being unbiased. Every team has a couple of weeks of playing bad baseball, but this the playoffs everybody starts from scratch. good luck!

jngkat,
I have no other team in MLB.  I have followed the Yankees since I've been 12.  I am now 42.  I believe I have the ability to pick out my favorite team's inadequacies.  So if the Yankees were in last place overall, would I be resigned to only talking about the good stuff.

It is what it is and I'm not too confident in their chances this year.  I make valid points and am telling the trruth.  Keep lying to yourself and turning a blind eye.  You'll go far that way.

Step to the plate and give and unbiased analysis, while rooting your team on.  It can be done.  Try not to be such a zero.

Yanks to skip Burnett in ALDS

Hard to believe, but the Yankees starting pitching going into the playoffs is their weekest point and biggest question mark.  Coming into the season, no one would have projected this.
The Yankees looked rock solid on the mound coming in.  Let's start with AJ Burnett.  he was nails during the playoffs last year.  he had a very low ERA and took some hrd luck losses / no decisions.  However, coming into this years playoffs, it's hard to imagine him ever getting another start as a Yankee.  Wow, what a difference a single year makes.
Andy Pettitte?  Here is the Yankees stopper over the past 15 years (minus his Houston Astros years).  He was the ideal #2 starter for a series like this and offered nothing but confidence going into his starts.  Do Yankee fans feel the same way, as he comes off injury and is looking shaky, at best going in?  I'm not as confident as I was in years past.
Phi Hughes is an enigma.  After the All Star break, it has been all down hill for Philly H.  So, not a lot of confidence there.
C.C. Sabathia is the only guy we can really depend on and he draws trhe other teams ace every time out.

The bully is super strong right now and pretty well rested going in, but I have a feeling they will be worn out quick.  don't expect the Yankees to score 6-8 runs per game either, as this is the playoffs and that is generally the exception to the rule.  That rule states good pitching beats good hitting every time.

Go Yanks, but I am not overly confident.
