A.J. Burnett You'd think $82.5 million would buy you a pretty good Game 4 starter. For the Yankees, it netted A.J. Burnett.

Burnett will indeed serve as the Yankees' Game 4 starter, Brian Cashman tells the New York Post 's Joel Sherman (via Twitter ).

Burnett was 10-15 with a 5.26 ERA in 33 starts this season, including a 1-5 record with a 7.09 ERA in his final nine starts of the season.

Burnett was 1-3 with a  6.27 ERA in four starts against the Rays, but 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA in three starts against the Rangers.

He only lasted four innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in his last start against the Rangers, a 7-6 Yankees loss at Rangers Ballpark on Sept. 11.

Burnett only went three innings in his last start against the Rays, allowing an earned run on two hits on Sept. 22 at Yankee Stadium.

Game 4 will be at Yankee Stadium, where Burnett has an ERA more than a run lower than on the road, 4.59 vs. 5.76.

UPDATE: Cashman said on a conference call the team thought a four-man rotation was the best plan for the postseason. The Yankees had used a three-man rotation the last four postseason series, but MLB has cut down on some of the off days, making that less feasible.

"Is that the best way to go? I don’t know if it’s the best way to go. I do think we’re deeper than that," Cashman said, (from the New York Times ). "I think we need to prepare to go with a four-man and see where that takes us and prove that we’re not just built for a division series with off days that are beneficial to us. In this round and probably the next round, we’re going to have to prove that we’re deeper than that."

As for Burnett, Cashman said he believes in him.

"I do have confidence and understand that he’s struggled," Cashman said. "That was before October. October can bring out the most competitive side of people."

Burnett to start Game 4

I think everyone is over reacting...nowhere in the article does it say it was Casmans decsion. It says that cashman said the TEAM thought it was in the best interest. How does anyone know if there was a closed door meeting and Girardi made the call. Is it at all possible that since the questions were asked to cashmen that he is only stating what was already decided?

Manager's Job to name pitcher to start - Nova

I believe Girardi, as much as I have had reservations about his judgment in the past two years, has the last word on this matter and it will depend on how the series goes.  If the Yanks are up 3-0, then Burnett or my Auntie Anne, who is a pretty good pitcher, can go in the meaningless fourth game and the Rangers should roll over.  (I am assuming the Rangers will be in it).  If the Rays are in, then there is practically no chance it will be 3-0 and Burnett has an earned run average covering a half dozen games with them that is almost in double figures.  Maybe the Yanks will score 12 that day and maybe not.  I would rather hand the ball over to Nova, who has had some degree of success with the Rays  if they are in it and the tally is 2-1 in either direction.  Then the fourth game becomes extremely important.  Winning the pennant is a lot more important than getting your money's worth from an underperforming professional.

I would rather go with Nova at this point with the way A.J. has been pitching....this is not great news....oh well here's hoping the Yanks are up 3-0 at that point.

In lieu of hurling insults, I'll just remind you Yankee fans that the main reason you guys beat the Phils last year is because Hamels was finishing off the worst year of his career & Lidge was awful....leaving the Phillies with 1 reliable starting pitcher & nobody in the bullpen to get an out. That's really not the case this year. This year's Cole Hamels is better than the 2008 version, Ryan Madson's been solid, & Lidge, since August, has been money. You guys want to continue to hurl insults back & forth, be my guest, but take a second to cut through all the B/S & understand that this year's version of the Phils might be the best team since the 1998-2000 Yankees....& I've heard many an expert compare them to those teams, most notably, Buster Olney, who covered those Yankee teams. I've also heard admitted Yankee fan Mike Francessa gush over these Phils....I know, the Yankees are the World Champs, & will continue to be until they get knocked off. That said, I'd like nothing more than to face NY in the was fun last year, & would be ever more fun this year.

"philsfan1"  what a douche.  Not only are you an idiot, (does your mom know that you are on her computer?) but you really don't know baseball either.  It will be fun to watch the Neandethal Philly fans start vomiting on one another

and make excuses all off season long when your "big 3" can't finish the job.......

Why is Cashman making this call??? I agree for the need of a 4 man rotation but as general manager his role is to build the team, and Girardi as manager decides how and when to field them. If I were Girardi I would tell Cashman to piss of and let me do my job or I walk. Same speech Cashman gave the Boss a few years ago. GO YANKEES

Glad to see things are a mess in the Big Toilet, I mean the Big Apple..........I love to hear Philadelphia people refer to NY as the Big Toilet. What does that make Philly then? The piss soaked urinal that's been broke for the last year?
