Cecil Cooper The Mariners are set to begin interviewing candidates this week with four names in line for interviews.

Eric Wedge, who has interviewed for several gigs so far and was thought to be the front-runner to take over the Orioles at one point, will draw an interview along with ex-Blue Jays manager John Gibbons.

A source tells 's Shannon Draper that there are two additional candidates. One is celebrity manager Bobby Valentine, who is in the running to take over the Marlins. Valentine would be a popular name in Seattle with its Japanese fan base, as the skipper spent several years in Japan, winning the Japan Series.

The other name is a bit of a surprise. Cecil Cooper is also expected to interview. Cooper was last seen piloting the Astros to a 171-170 record from 2007-09, replacing Phil Garner for the final 31 games and being fired with 13 games left in 2009. Cooper led the 'Stros to an 86-75 mark in 2008 but was reportedly a very unpopular manager with both players and fans.

However, Brewers GM Jack Zduriencik has ties with Cooper: he was a scout, farm director and bench coach for Milwaukee following his playing career which ended after 1987.

Mariners to interview Valentine, Cooper

I sense another 100 game losing season. The Mariners need to look for someone other than retreads.
