Fredi Gonzalez See below for an update on the situation that has Gonzalez poised to become skipper of the Braves after speculation earlier today Gonzalez could be named prior to the World Series.

If anyone's plugged into the Braves, it's David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution . O'Brien believes Fredi Gonzalez will be hired as the new manager of the Braves either just before or after the World Series.

In perhaps the worst-kept secret since the day Fredi Gonzalez was fired, this marriage was inevitable. Gonzalez was a longtime coach for the Braves before taking on the Marlins' managerial job. He received strong reviews from in the industry but seemed to be constantly fighting an uphill battle with management. Atlanta has refused to speak publicly about Gonzalez and the job, preferring to wait until after Bobby Cox's final game to begin finding a new manager.

That may not make sense, given how deep the Pirates, Blue Jays, Cubs and Mariners are in in their own managerial searches. But Atlanta can afford to wait: Gonzalez wants to replace Cox, and the Braves want that as well, as has constantly been reported. Fredi interviewed for the Cubs job, but no real traction has occurred on that front.

Commissioner Bud Selig prefers a moratorium on other events of baseball during postseason play, which is why O'Brien believes the announcement could happen just before or after the World Series, but not during. Given that the commissioner would likely prefer to keep the focus on the World Series following the Championship Series, the Braves will likely wait until after to tab Gonzalez.

Cox retired after 29 seasons in the dugout Monday night when the Braves were eliminated in Game 4 of the NLDS against the Giants.

UPDATE : Forget waiting for just before the World Series. The Braves are expected to announce Gonzalez' hiring as manager, reports FOX News 5 . O'Brien confirms that the official announcement will come Thursday, a day before the NLCS is slated to start.

Report: Gonzalez to be next Braves skipper

Why dont you man up and eat your words? You crowned the Braves champs in July. You hate on Philly more than you care about your team. You come off like a jealous little girl. Accept our dominance, tip your hat, and walk away!

I sure do hate on them. They don't deserve the poo on the bottom of my shoe. Dominance? you've got to be smoking something. What dominance are you referring too? The Phillies mini 4 year run? Yeah that sure is some dominance bro.

I'll take the "declining" lol - Phils over your half hearted Braves any day

Only in your dreams would they be better. The 90's says hi.

So you are basing their obvious decline on their ages rather than the fact that they had the best record in the NL this year and are picked by many to win the series this year? And why are they so called "superstars"? Because you don't like them? I could not stand Chipper, Smoltz, Glavine, but I can recognize they were superstars. Your hatred is so deep that you cannot recognize the Phils roster is littered with guys who are some of the biggest names in the sport today? You may be the one that needs to return when they have a legitimate argument.

GG-

Bro - I've seen you on the Phillies board so much its unreal. You post there more than you do here! Looking back at my posts, I am very rarely on any other post other than a Phillies related topic, so eat it. Why would I be obsessed with your crap team or toothless, cousin loving fanbase anyway?

Youre such a tool GG. How can you say a team that has absoultley dominated the NL is in any sort of decline if we are missing one good player in Werth. Man, you are really obsessed with the Phils and their fans, you come off like a jealous idiot. Hey, are you enjoying the playoffs? - I sure am.

Go Phils!

Yet you're on a Braves thread. Seems like you're the one who's obessed bro. Players primes usually between the ages of 28-32, so yes they're on the decline. Most of the Phillies so called "superstars" are all in their 30's. Come back when you get a legit argument. I'll be watching the playoffs on t.v. and yes im enjoying them and i can't wait until the Phillies get knocked out!

Go Braves!

Uh DMB, you may want to check your "facts" regarding the incident. She called 911 frantically claiming he punched her and pulled her hair. Police arrived finding marks on her and evidence supporting this claim and arrested him. The next day, she changed her tune and decided to withdraw charges. Why did she drop it? Who knows? But evidence supported that she was physically assaulted. you forgot to mention all the counseling they had to attend after the incident, and I believe he had to go thru anger management as well if i remember corrrectly.  you can sugar coat it and choose to look away all you want. i don't think I am digging too deep for a negative to put one and one together here. I'm just tired of this guy being celebrated like royalty with this skeleton in his closet. of course you people in ATL will give him a standing O for 14 division wins in a row. I choose to say good riddance and don't let the door hit you in the ass.

There is nothing classless about my questioning the character of an accused wife beater, sorry.

I think it's awesome that people like Cody repeatedly bring up the "fact" that Bobby Cox is a "wife beater".  Do you really feel the need to go so far out of your way to try to be negative?

Cox was arrested in 1995 because he and his wife got in a fight and she called the cops.  No charges were ever filed and both Bobby and Pam denied that there was ever any type of assault.  Her account is that she got mad and tried to kick him out of the house and he wouldn't leave, so she called the cops.  She also said the cops over-reacted by arresting him, and the police later apologized for wrongfully arresting him.  There has never been any other problem in the last 15 years.

So apparently, one instance 15 years ago in which no charges were ever filed and both parties deny any type of violence makes Bobby Cox a "wife-beating scumbag", as I've seen several people put it?

Nevermind the countless hours Bobby has spent working for numerous charities, and never mind the fact that virtually every single person involved in MLB has had nothing but wonderful things to say about him all season.  The opinion of a few d-bag Phillies and Mets fans surely outweighs all of that other stuff.

Too bad Bobby Cox couldn't be as classy as you losers.

Was beating your wife a prerequisite to taking over for Cox, or can Fredi take care of that after he fills the position.

gg, if you think the Phils will be on the decline next year simply because of Werth's exit you are truly delusional. With that pitching staff in tact and Brown a more than capable repalcement for Werth, they won't miss a beat. You may not want to count on the Phils declining and focus more on getting some legitimate big league batters to complement your decent pitching staff. With some good offense the Phils may not have caught the braves this year.
