El Duque hoping to pitch in 2011

Orlando Hernandez Orlando Hernandez hasn't pitched in the majors the last three seasons and only has 26 2/3 minor-league innings to his name the last two seasons.

And yet, the 45-year-old isn't ready to hang up his cleats as he intends to play in 2011, reports Bill Ladson of .

El Duque played for the Nationals in 2010, splitting the year between rookie ball and Double-A where he posted a 1.72 ERA in 15 2/3 innings, punching out 21 and walking five. He left the squad when he was informed he would not be called up to the majors in September.

For someone who wants to keep pitching, Hernandez is going about it entirely wrong. He signs late every season, pitches minimally in the minors and then pouts and goes home when told he's not going to pitch in the majors.

If he wants a spot in the bigs, he needs to get into spring training, accept that he will spend the majority of the first half (at the very least) in the farm, and hope he performs enough to hit the majors eventually. His current strategy is not working.

El Duque hoping to pitch in 2011

baseball is one of the most screwed up sports on the planet.  there is way too much emphasis on youth as all the scouts are still dreaming of picking up the next Willie Mays.  A guy like El Duque is old.  That is a fact but if he can focus his time on quality I would not doubt he could pitch meaningful games down the stretch from August through October.  Pithcing is about mixing it up and with the depth of bullpens and micromanaging by managers today El Duque would be a perfect fit to get key outs.  Unfortunately scouts couldn't pick up on talent if it hits them in the face these days as most scouts have inferior educations.  That is baseball.

God I miss El Duque. There's a guy who knew how to handle a big game. I would start him tonight over AJ Burnett in a heartbeat.
