Fans didn't help Yankees' bid for Lee

Kristen Lee was going to be key to the Yankees landing Cliff Lee this winter. Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia, who has pretty much been openly courting his old Indians teammate, emphasizes how close his wife, Amber, is with Kristen (that's Kristen on the upper right, with Amber next to her, in a photo courtesy of the Plain Dealer ).

Sabathia said that during the Rangers' last regular-season series in New York, he made sure Amber took Kristen out to see the sights and talk up the advantages of living in the Big Apple.

But it doesn't sound like Kristen Lee is much of a Yankees fan after her experience at Yankee Stadium during the ALCS. She told Bob Nightengale of USA Today that while sitting in the visiting family section, she was taunted, cursed, had beer thrown at her and was even spit at from the section above.

"The fans did not do good things in my heart," Kristen says. "When people are staring at you, and saying horrible things, it's hard not to take it personal."

Kristen Lee also talked about how much she has enjoyed having her husband just a 40-minute flight from the family's Little Rock, Arkansas, home.

"Cliff can fit in anywhere, but it makes my life a lot easier," she said. "We've never had a short commute before. Having a direct flight from Little Rock is great."

Sure, it's easy to say Lee will simply go to the highest bidder. But if you don't think his wife will have some input on the matter, well, I'm going to guess you're probably not married.

-- David Andriesen

UPDATE: Lee addressed the report today during his media availability. He was asked if it would affect his free agency decision.

""=No. I don't know the guy that did it. It could be anyone," Lee told reporters . "Who knows? Who cares? They're at home right now."

Hey there outlaw, where are you at? Safe at home? I bet so. Why? Because guys like me are in Iraq so you can have the freedoms you enjoy. I have been here 4 years and will not leave until our troops do. Don't get all pissed because I think NY is letting these freaks build near what I think in hollowed ground. I have said in my forums these people will laugh and think of that place as a victory shrine. I have worked around this people for years and speak with knowledge you will never have. So back yourself up and go do something to stop them and I will be here in the Green Zone helping OUR Troops until they leave and will go with them to Afganistan.

This all stated by banging on the fat chicks and you Yankees fans.

First of all, I will gladly say thank you to anyone who has served our country in any way, shape or form.  What makes you think I have done nothing to serve my country?  Assumptions kill.  You ought to know this better than anyone if you are indeed in the Service.  My comments do not badmouth or diminish the success of our great Troops.  HOWEVER, YOUR comments defer to building a mosque on sacred ground, and heck- I don't even live in the City and I take it personally.  Did you elaborate until prompted?  No.  I have seen far too many posts of people/ sports fans on these boards saying 'NY deserved what they got', and idiotic comments worse than that.  That infuriates and enrages me to no end.

The reason this thread/ blog was started is because they made it about Yankee fans as a generalization which you are continuing.  Fine- we don't make it about politics, but you are making it personal by your generalized attacks on Yankee fans.  And we have no right to retort?  Are you friggin' kidding me?

I have been in other venues where the fans have made me feel extremely uncomfortable with their comments and aggressiveness.  But again- it's only NY fans that do this.  Every other fan is so well behaved.  I would love to see a hater on this board show me an example of a sporting event where this does not happen.  Does it make it right?  Absolutely not.  And I certainly condemn the moron(s) who ran their mouth to Lee's wife or family.  I have seen no one else on these boards talk about fans in general.  There are drunken idiots in every crowd.  I will reiterate as many times as it takes for people to understand that it's not just a NY Yankees fan problem.  It ocurrs at every venue, concert, sporting event, debate, etc.  Anyone who doesn't agree with this is dilusional or jacked on drugs.

This is how I see it, once we hit strike 3 the Yankees are out of the Cliff Lee race.   Strike one has already happened, Yankee fans insulted Cliff Lee's wife.  Yankees management can say anything they want to try and fix that but it won't change a thing.  Woman have more power over men then we like to admit.

Strike 2 will be if the Rangers win the world series.  Lee wants to win,, end of story.   And finally strike 3 will be if the Rangers offer Lee a huge contract.  What the Yankees offer won't mean a thing. Too much is made of the money when in reality in a case like this money isn't the issue people think it is.  This isn't a mediocre player getting 10 million per year instead of 4 somewhere else.  This isn't like burnett getting millions more then anybody would have paid him.  A guy like him, that's who the Yankees can buy.

Cliff Lee is a special talent that is going to get at least a 5 year 100 million dollar offer from the Rangers to stay in Texas.  You think if the Yankees offer 25 per year it'll change his lifestyle at all???  No difference at all....

My call? Cliff Lee stays in Texas.....  and if I'm wrong and he goes to the Yankees I'll dry heave.......

I rather watch the games in HD and avoid the nuts that are in every ballpark. Attending any sporting event today isn't that enjoyable anymore. Fans drinking is out of control.

I was at the stadium for Game 4 of the ALCS. I don't blame Mrs Lee. I was sitting in the Yankee family section and I couldnt believe the amount of disrepect from the fans. I am a die hard Yankee fan. Die hard! Here's a perfect example...Girardi made the right call and pitched to Molina. He's a statistic guy and even Molina (I feel a veteran catcher) said he made the right call. Molina admitted he would have walked Murphy and pitched to him but the call didnt go Girardi's way. The disrepect, rudeness, and vulgarity was ridiculous.

For all the fans that yell at oppossing players or their own think of this next time...
1. How supportive is that? Can you imagine if you had a crowd watching you at your job or your boss or client calling you a 'moron', 'idiot', or worse for making a mistake.
2. Why would someone want to play in a stadium where they get harassed?

GREAT JOB TO THE IDIOT FAN THAT YELLED AT LEE'S WIFE. YEAH THAT'S THE WAY TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP NEXT YEAR...YELL AT THE TOP FREE AGENT'S WIFE BC HE GOT TRADED TO THE RANGERS

WAY TO GO

Really?  You mean visiting team fans were not treated kindly @ Yankee Stadium?  Is this news?  First off, for anyone who was at the Stadium for any of the three games against Texas, there were only a few Rangers fans present, little pockets of one of two people who were for sure harassed & had nasty things screamed at them, but the friends & family section was just obvious to anyone with eyes.  They had an entire section in the second level just above the visiting dugout.  They stood out like a big Red sore thumb in the middle of a sea of Navy Blue.  They were an obvious target for anyone so inclined.  (The fact that TBS kept a cameraman plopped right there next to them certainly didn't help matters.) So they got yelled at?  Welcome to NY.  I'm sure she never heard any of that language when she was watching Cliff pitch in Philly...Please.  He'll go where the money is & if Cashman writes a big enough check, Cliff can buy his sweetheart diamond earplugs.

I am from new york and I am a met's fan. That being said you have stupid fans everywhere. I have seen football and baseball games in boston, cleveland, washington dc, philly, baltimore and florida. I have seen drunk, stupid, unruly fans at all places. You have to somewhat expect it, especially in rivalry games. If you don't like it, no one will force you to buy a ticket and you can watch it from the comfort of your own living room. That being said I don' condone throwing anything or spitting on anyone and that has no place anywhere. But words are just that, words and we all know words dont hurt.
