Alderson must find supporting cast as GM of Mets

Sandy Alderson Now that the Mets have a new general manager in Sandy Alderson, it's time for Alderson to tackle job No. 1 in finding a manager for the Mets.

Alderson has gone on record in the past by saying that he feels a manager should be a "subordinate who should carry out the GM's vision," as Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes.

Mets fans have intimate knowledge of that type of manager, as Alderson's last hire was manager Art Howe in Oakland, who later moved to the Mets as he chafed under the restrictions Alderson and Billy Beane placed on him. It's also why Ken Macha exited town.

Candidates for the skipper's job are unknown, although Sherman posits John Gibbons, Bob Melvin or Don Wakamatsu as logical candidates.

Meanwhile, Alderson can't concern himself with just the search for a new manager. He's got to fill out a team, see if he can dump any of the untradeable contracts and bring in lieutenants to work under him in the front office.

The former Padres CEO is hoping to bring in Paul DePodesta and J.P. Ricciardi, two former GMs who have previous working relationships with Alderson. DePodesta, currently an assistant GM and executive vice-president in San Diego, would be brought in to boost New York's statistical department while Ricciardi would key in on player personnel.

The sentiment is that DePodesta will indeed move to the Mets, while Ricciardi could remain as an analyst for ESPN or accept other jobs that have been offered him.

Alderson also needs to get the scouting department in order, as scouting contracts expire Saturday and none of the employed have heard anything about their status.

Alderson must find supporting cast as GM of Mets

So you're a Superstar?  Well, then if you want to pretend you can blog at that level you should get your facts straight.  Alderson won three pennants as the General Manager of the A's ('88, '89, '90).  They won the World Series in '89.
And Joe Gibbs won two Super Bowls in 5 years between '87 and '91.  When he came back to the Skins, how well did that Joe Gibbs magic work out?  You created a screen name to come on here and bash me for being at superstar level (which I've earned by making very valid points regularly), yet argue something that he did 2 decades ago, during a different era of baseball, as some kind of great feat for now?  Come back to me when you realize that this is 2010 and not 1990.

You think the Wilpons will be running the show????!??

It's not about the Wilpons running the show.  It's about them NOT attempting to have any kind of real say in what happens with their team.  Instead, they've let losers like Steve Phillips and Omar Minaya turn this team into an overpaid laughing stock.

To SoxinRhody, you're also forgetting about that Minaya gem of resigning Luis Castillo to a two year deal.  That's a classic Mets signing.

Alderson must find supporting cast as GM of Mets

Just a terrible, terrible, terrible hire as GM.  Sandy Alderson is such an arrogant, pretentious, condescending jag!  Just what the Mets need...an old bitter white guy who should be retired, not trying to pad his retirement account.   Sandy is such a jerk!  Alienated everyone in San Diego.  The players, fans and media.  People stayed away from the ballpark just because of this tool.
Can someone tell me why baseball recyles these relics and failures time and time again?
More food for thought on Sandy:  He couldn't wait to fire Bruce Bochy.  Now the Giants manager is two wins away from a World Championship.  And Sandy Alderson is the guy you want to make the major decisions for your organization.  This will be a disaster.

"Hey guys, I was part of the most successful unsuccessful team outside of the Twins.  Hurray for me."....

The Mets could be really good... You think the Wilpons will be running the show????!??  Yeah, just like Bud Selig was in charge of the MLB for the last 15 years....um... no.  Harvard Law educated Alderson will run the show, or he won't be there.  The Mets could be good soon.......

The Wilpons do suck, but at least Omar Minaya is gone. The guy made one bad move after another. The Johan Santana move actually has turned out ok, no so much because Santana has been lights-out in the NL East, but because the kids that went back to Minnesota haven't done a whole lot. Some of the stuff hasn't been his fault either, with Delgado aging, Beltran injured, Reyes injured/a headcase and David Wright seemingly stalled on the brink of superstardom.

It's the signing of Jason Bay, the refusal to admit that Ollie Perez sucks and move on, same with John Maine, etc. Sandy Alderson has to figure out how to break this team down and shed these contracts and stockpile the farm. The Mets don't have much in the system, and your Beltrans/Reyes/Wrights could net some serious talent. New Yorkers probably won't be patient enough to allow this rebuild; but this is the proven formula. Also, a team with the Metsies payroll can simultaneously rebuild the farm but still field a somewhat competitive team with some name recognition. With a huge market and a new stadium, the Mets need to do this rebuild now and not let these injury-prone and overpaid guys sink them into oblivion for the next decade.

The Wilpons still own the team, so they'll continue to suck.  "Hey guys, I was part of the most successful unsuccessful team outside of the Twins.  Hurray for me."
