Rangers owner: Yankee fans 'embarrassment'

Rangers owner Chuck Greenberg took some time out from cheerleading Monday to level some harsh words at Yankee fans, calling them "violent," "apathetic" and "an embarrassment."

In an interview on ESPN radio in Dallas, Greenberg was asked about the Rangers' crowds in the postseason. He contrasted his team's "great" fans to what he saw at Yankee Stadium during the ALCS.

"I thought Yankee fans, frankly, were awful," he said. "They were either violent or apathetic, neither of which is good. So I thought Yankee fans were by far the worst of any I've seen in the postseason. I thought they were an embarrassment."

There's probably no chance this story comes up again the next time the Rangers visit New York, right?

UPDATE: And the Yankees play it dead solid perfect with their response. Word is they're fuming over Greenberg's comments, but they issued this official response: "At this time, we are honoring the Commissioner’s policy regarding respecting and not distracting from the World Series."

So they get in a shot without taking a shot, and they look classy doing it. Nicely played, Yanks.

Apathetic is actually a good word, considering how quickly those fans bolted from the stadium in the home losses.  It's the playoffs, you stay in your seat until the last pitch.  I remember the 86 Mets, where the stadium was still packed until the last out of every single game.

Greenberg-How would you feel if your quarter billion dollar team got spanked by a bunch of thousand-aires? YOu telling me you wouldnt be embarrassed, and maybe act out irrationally? This is an EPIC embarrassment we are talking about, i mean, not as bad as the worst choke in sports history-04, or missing the playoffs with the highest single season payroll in all of sports history-08, but EPIC never the less. Im surprised these poor people havent crawled into a hole, let them be violent and apathetic, whatever makes them feel better!

Ok, rude?  Check.  vulgar?  Check.  But APATHETIC?  No way.  I don't think there's ever been a single player, fan, coach or media person who's ever used the word "APATHETIC" when describing Yankee fans.  I mean, in NY it's a big deal if the Yanks lose two out of three to Toronto in the middle of May.  Probably a bigger deal then most playoff games in most mid-america cities.

You wanna knock Yankee fans, there are probably a hundred ways to do it.  Not caring is not something you can say.  Yankee fans are so bad they repeatedly lead baseball in attendance.  They bring the most revenue to their team in MLB.  So how do we not care?

Rangers are just mad because they are getting slammed and most of America couldn't care less.  Shoot, I'd bet in Dallas there are 10 times as many people talking about how bad the Cowboys are (lovin that) then about the Rangers.  Just cause we dont create/buy into goofy little gimmicks doesn't make us apathetic.

As far as "violence" I'd like him to define that.  In most stadiums you go in with the road teams apparel, you better expect abuse.  If you don't get any, those are the crappy apathetic fans.  Now could those situations escalate?  Sure.  But that happens everywhere.  Bottom line, I've never seen a Yankee fan pick a fight at the stadium.  I've seen fights, mainly because other teams fans can't take the heat of the verbal abuse.  If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen!  Either leave your teams colors at home or take the ribbing.  If you try to come in like a tough guy, sure you'll get your ass beat!

Well let's see, you are in New York for a baseball game at Yankee Stadium and you are probably wearing something that says you are a Rangers person. What do you expect? I am certainly no Yankee fan but this is NEW YORK not the middle of nowhere, so you have to expect that fans for the most prolific franchise in baseball history are going to be how can I put it ...... supportive of their team and NOT YOURS! Be realistic what have the Rangers ever won up until now.......let's see of yeah NOTHING!

WOW, an embarrassment ?  What is he comparing this to ?  The Rangers have only won TWO playoff series in their existence.  They have always lost to NY in the past, and no comments then,  Could this be some kind of message he is trying to send to Cliff Lee subconsciously to try and keep him away from NY.  You're being transparent Chuck.
