Renteria unsure about future

Edgar Renteria If Edgar Renteria wants to go out on top, he's got the perfect shot.

Renteria said he's considering retirement after his MVP performance in the World Series.

"I don't know. I'm going to think about it and see what happens," he told the Associated Press .

The Giants have a $10.5 million option on Renteria for 2011, but it's an almost certainty that the team will instead choose the $500,000 buyout on the 35-year old shortstop.

Renteria was limited to 72 regular-season games in 2010, but with a weak shortstop market, he's sure to draw some attention in the free agent market if he wants to continue playing.

Edgar Renteria While his future is unsure, is legacy is secured.

Thirteen years after giving the Marlins their first World Series with a walk-off single, he delivered San Francisco its first title with a three-run homer in the seventh inning of Game 5 on Monday.

With his homer and the Giants' 3-1 victory, he became the fourth player in baseball history to collect a game-winning RBI in the seventh inning or later in two different World Series clinching games. He's the first non-Yankee to do so, joining the list of Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig.

"Maybe I am more in focus," Renteria told the San Francisco Chronicle . "I know it's a different game, because if you make a mistake, you're going to pay. That's why my focus is different, my level is different, I just want to be the guy to do something. … I can't explain that. I was ready to play."

Renteria unsure about future

It would be a perfect retirement time yet at the same time it would be a true loos to the MLB to see a player of that caliber go.
